NEW DELHI \/ JHARGRAM : In an exclusive interview with UNI Television, the TV news arm of the popular print wire service United News of India, an eyewitness has claimed that Umakanto Mahato, the main suspect in the Jnaneswari Express train sabotage, was murdered by CPI (M) goons known as Harmads. Abani Mahato, the pillion rider with Umakanto at the time of his death has detailed the sequence of events that night to UNI TV.<\/p>\n
Regional and national news channels who for long had been trying to get an interview with Abani Mahato picked up the news from UNI TV\u2019s satellite feed in large numbers. The eyewitness, who was Umakanto\u2019s co-rider on the motorcycle that he was riding at the time of the fatal attack, said that Mahato was neither shot dead in a gun-battle between the PCPA (People’s Committee against Police Atrocities) and the joint forces, nor was there any firing or counter- firing; he was actually killed by the “Harmads”(armed CPI (M) cadre).<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were coming back from a meeting in Pathra Gram in the Patashimul jungle. We saw the road blocked with ropes. Umakanto told me to put the rope up so I got off the bike and pulled the rope up\u2026I got out and Sameer and another person got off the bike. The \u2018Harmads\u2019 (CPM goons) car was there, we didn\u2019t have any arms with us. The Harmads fired at us for 5-7 minutes. We ran away in the forest. We did not meet the joint forces,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
On the same day, UNITV also did an exclusive phono with Joydeb Mahato (PCPA leader and accused in the Jnaneswari carnage) who endorsed the allegation of Abani Mahato that Umakanto was murdered by CPM cadre.<\/p>\n
In a clear indication of the Maoist support for Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Joydeb Mahato also said that people of the state may give industrialization a chance under her leadership. He also hinted that violence in the State may go down if Mamata became the Chief Minister.<\/p>\n
“At present five out of eight news channels in West Bengal – who are clients of UNI TV – have almost raced ahead of each other to air both the breaking news stories from UNI TV first on their channel,” said Pradeep Singh, Executive Editor, UNI Television.<\/p>\n
