\tKeshav Jha : I am feeling saddened, disconsolate, heart-broken, dejected, despondent and utterly helpless after going through the news of Sh. Pravin Kumar Gunjan being attacked by local police. For some moment I was simply shocked. I know this man, Pravin Kumar Gunjan , a National School of Drama (NSD) alumni, a young artist of immense calibre, an artist who chose harder path of serving the art rather than commerce, bitten black and blue by local police in Begusarai, Bihar, as per the report shared by Sh. Shyam Sahni, another undergrad of NSD. Since the source of the news is Sh. Sahni I hope not the news false.<\/p>\n
\tThe Victim of Police tyranny, Sh. Gunjan, has just few days back in the month of September, received the Ustad Bismillah Khan award from Sangeet Natak Academy for his outstanding contribution to theatrical art form. As far as I know, I cannot think of Mr. Gunjan being engaged in any unlawful activity demanding an arrest and torture as reported. Further the news report says that after release from unlawful confinement when matter came to the knowledge of local SP, the SP visited Sh. Gunjan, in the hospital enquiring and ensuring his well-being. I do not think an ordinary criminal guilty of a crime is first released after being arrested and secondly visited by Local SP for ensuring his well being. Therefore I am assuming that Sh. Gunjan is innocent and I hope that I am not wrong in my assumption. Assuming that I stand by Sh. Pravin Kuman Gunjan with my heart and soul, first because he is a common man and secondly he is an Artist and what has been done to Sh. Gunjan is tyranny, terrorism and gross injustice and I condemn, despise and abominate this cowardly act of despotism against Sh. Gunjan.<\/p>\n
\tHitherto I have to find whether he is victimised because of he being a performing artist or otherwise. If he is victimised because of his artistry, in my humble opinion, it requires greater attention of the authorities and institution, always boasting themselves as protector of freedom, liberty, human rights, etc.<\/p>\n
\tIt is matter of greater concern for a society which claims itself free but in which a young, promising , celebrated and decorated artist is subjected to such a bad fate for his artistry. It is deplorable. To me any aggression or attack on any art form is attack on humanity. As under current industrial and economic system, most of us are living under economic tyranny having no freedom at all. We are being trained, groomed to be not human, devoid of any freedom and expression and happiness. These are the artists, who through their art make us sense, essentials of humanity, the freedom, the human expressions and the happiness and in turn humanize us time and again. Therefore it is necessary to protect the art and its constituents to protect the humanity.<\/p>\n
\tFor the current aggression on Sh. Gunjan I request rather implore that the action must be taken at every possible level against the injustice, if there is any. At local level actions must be taken under Section 220 of Indian Penal Code which provides against illegal confinement which is – "Whoever, being in any office which gives him legal authority to commit persons for trial or to confinement, or to keep persons in confinement, corruptly or maliciously commits any person for trial or to confinement, or keeps any person in confinement, in the exercise of that authority, knowing that in so doing he is acting contrary to law, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years, or with fine, or with both."<\/p>\n
\tSecondly complaints must be lodged against the despot police officer, in the office of Superintendent of Police (SP) and District Magistrate.<\/p>\n
\tThirdly Complaints must be lodged in the office of the Bihar Human Right Commission for the act of police officer against Sh. Gunjan violating his fundamental right of freedom as guaranteed by the Constitution .<\/p>\n
\tFurther the matter should be taken up by NSD itself and be reported to the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and Government of Bihar for appropriate actions and should follow the matter to the rightful conclusion ensuring jusice.<\/p>\n
\tLast but not the least, all the alumni of NSD, art lovers, artist, etc. should come together in support of Sh. Gunjan and protest against this aggression, oppression and despotism at his own level in peaceful manner for putting pressure on authorities so that justice be done.<\/p>\n
\tLastly, I wish Sh. Pravin Kumar Gunjan speedy recovery and extend my support in his fight against the injustice done to him.<\/p>\n
