\tVeteran journalist Alfred D'Cruz passes away<\/strong><\/p>\n

\tMUMBAI : Veteran journalist, historian and author Alfred D'Cruz passed away in Bandra at the age of 91 after a brief illness. He is believed to be the first Indian to have been employed by the editorial department of 'The Times of India' way back in 1947.<\/p>\n

\tD'Cruz was handpicked for the job by the then British Editor, Sir Francis Low. "He often recalled working until 4.00 am, struggling with the hot metal press to prepare the blocks for photographs for computers had yet to arrive on the scene," his son Sunil said from Muscat.<\/p>\n

\t"He had an illustrious career and worked with stalwarts like R K Laxman, Mario Miranda, Khushwant Singh, Behram Contractor and Girilal Jain." Afie, as he liked to be called, was the only journalist to write the 'Round & About' column in the 'Evening News of India' when 'Busybee' was on leave.<\/p>\n

\tIn 1982, D'Cruz retired as editor of TOI's 'Whos Who' yearbook but remained active for years afterward. At the age of 69, he joined Kuwait Times and worked there up until the Gulf War in 1991-2. The end came on June 1. Alfred D'Cruz is survived by his son Sunil and three daughters, one of whom Susheela Soares, was also employed at TOI.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
