Several young women reporters abused and physically attacked

: Defend Democracy and Women’s Rights Says DUJ : On this March 8, International Women’s Day, the Delhi Union of Journalists and its Gender Council commends with pride the role of women journalists in upholding media rights and freedoms in the face of growing assaults on the freedom of expression. We note with dismay the increasing attacks on the media as well as various sections of our society for exercising the right to debate and dissent. In recent weeks several women journalists have been variously targeted for their work.

Several young women reporters were among those abused and physically attacked in a courtroom in Delhi while covering the case of sedition against the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University students union. Bravely, they were at the courts two days later for the next hearing, despite danger from an unruly mob, doing their work shoulder to shoulder with their male colleagues.

In Thiruvananthapuram, a woman TV anchor has faced abuse and death threats on social media and on the phone for hosting a show on the Mahishasur controversy. In Ahmadabad, a woman journalist was attacked by a criminal convicted for rioting, rape and murder when she tried to interview him while he was on parole.

In Chhattisgarh, at least one woman journalist has been hounded out for her gutsy coverage of rape and other atrocities by security forces against hapless tribals; another woman researcher has faced the same fate for her journalistic writing against these atrocities.

NDTV’s leading woman anchor/editor has filed an FIR with the police for the death threats she has received for coverage of the JNU events.a

These instances reflect the growing intolerance among communal, casteist and fundamentalist forces. In many cases they have the power and might of the State behind them.

We deeply regret the role played by some media houses and individual journalists in whipping up hypernationalism and using it to crush dissent. Hate speech is becoming a tool for denouncing all dissent and brings with it the dangers of the lynch mob. We believe that the Indian nation comprises a huge diversity of peoples, ethnicities, religions, languages, cultures and traditions that create our vibrant, secular democracy.  These differences should be recognized and celebrated instead of demonizing them.

Growing lawlessness and impunity for politicians and their lumpen gangs as well as impunity for state forces is endangering all citizens and making women particularly vulnerable. On International Women’s Day we call upon all our members to play an active role in promoting equality and peace and in defending the threats to our democracy.
