I am Dr Nutan Thakur, a freelance journalist and social activist, associated with National RTI Forum, Lucknow. I would like to present two serious issues related with the Amity University. The University, on its web-page, http:\/\/amity.edu\/Admission\/govt_recognition.asp , says- \u201cAmity Universities and the Degrees awarded by them are recognized by the UGC\u201d. This fact does not seem to be correct. The simple reason is that UGC does not recognize any University. In fact all that can be done under section 12(a) of the UGC Act 1956 is to inquire into the financial needs of Universities. Again under section 12A, it can do regulation of fees and prohibition of donations in certain cases. The website tries to base its claim as per a letter obtained by Amity University under the RTI Act sent by Sri K P Singh, Joint Secretary, UGC to Sri Anand Chauhan, General Secretary, Amity on 11\/04\/2008. Nowhere in the letter is anything about UGC\u2019s recognition to Amity is written. Yet, Amity presents it as UGC recognition . Since there is no concept of recognition by UGC, hence I would request you to kindly remove this fact from your website other places where it is being stated and claimed.<\/p>\n

Similarly, on its same web page, Amity writes-\u201cUnited Nations Listing\u201d and says- \u201cAmity University is included in the list of Universities maintained by the International Association of Universities (IAU).\u201d International Association of Universities (IAU) is a UNESCO-based worldwide association of higher education institutions. It has among its charter of duties maintenance of a database of Intuitions of higher studies. To quote from its web-page, http:\/\/www.iau-aiu.net\/onlinedatabases\/list.html- \u201cThe list below is extracted on a periodic basis from the database maintained by the International Association of Universities on higher education institutions and systems worldwide, and includes higher education institutions offering a least a post-graduate diploma\/degree.\u201d Hence this is not any special listing or recognition but only a compilation of names but it is being presented as some major achievement\/ recognition.<\/p>\n

It is true that Amity University has been established by the state of Uttar Pradesh through Amity University Uttar Pradesh Act, 2005 and it has the power of granting Degrees as stated in section 22(1) which says that \u201cThe right of conferring or granting degrees shall be exercised only by a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a State Act..\u201d I accordingly request you to remove all such claims regarding the University which are misleading, incorrect and improper.<\/p>\n
