The past year has seen a sharp growth in the scope and range of the work BBC Reality Check undertakes. It has become central in helping audiences pick their way through claims and counter claims. Reality Check text pieces and fact boxes are key to the BBC Mobile and Online offer. We also produce digital videos and work with Social News to reach new audiences through Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Increasingly, our journalism is broadcast on BBC television and radio.
This post is funded through W2020 investment and we aim to work in collaboration with World Service and languages services to get as many of our text pieces and videos translated by language services.
As outlined in the job description your role will be to work with the Reality Check team in London and language service teams in Delhi to identify the stories/claims that will be of most interest to audiences. Commissioning, writing, sub-editing and producing fact-checked content about India and the region which addresses important editorial questions in co-ordination with the Reality Check team, is what you will be doing on a day to day basis. You interpret data through graphics, charts and other visual journalism so that we can better explain stories to audiences in more than one language.
Additionally you will work with World Service and other reporters on Reality Check stories, working for outlets in multiple languages and on a variety of platforms.
You will work with online and broadcast outlets to ensure that Reality Check uses the best formats to communicate its research in the most accessible way, whether it’s in text, video, audio, graphics or live.
You will work with Journalists and Researchers, providing on going feedback and contributing to their development.
Are you the right candidate?
You will have demonstrable knowledge and in depth understanding of Indian, regional and global current affairs. With excellent writing and sub-editing skills you will also bring experience of delivering digital editorial content. Proven experience of leading an editorial team and of making judgements on matters of editorial sensitivity will be essential as well as experience of data led journalism and the use of analytics tools and their role in helping to achieve audience targets.
The ability to work flexibly within a small, dedicated team will be advantageous.
Contract: Six month fixed term contract/attachment.
