Doordarshan Documentary- ‘Whispers of Warming’ on Climate change wins First Prize

New Delhi : Climate Change is an issue which is affecting every aspect of human life from food, water, energy security, health and global economy.  It is manifesting in more unpredictable weather patterns and frequent and intensive natural hazards such as typhoons, sea level surges, flooding, landslides, drought and glacial lake outbursts. India is a major stake holder in the Paris declaration on climate change and IPCC.

A one hour documentary film on climate change directed by Anoop Khajuria, Asstt Director of Programme, Doordarshan attempted to tell the story of people in the western Himalayas who are being impacted by the climate change due to global warming. India’s Public Service Broadcaster, Doordarshan has won coveted best Documentary Film Award in Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union TV Award competition held in Krabi, Thailand for its documentary film “Whispers of Warming” based on the theme of climate change in Ladakh division of western Himalayas.  It competed with 40 films from 20 countries across the world.  This Documentary was produced towards fulfilling Prasar Bharati’s mandate of Public Service Broadcasting. Mr Jawhar Sircar CEO Prasar Bharati congratulated the team.

An extraordinary journey onto pinnacles and gorges of Kashmir Himalayas. Travelling through its geographical textures, seasonal hues, endemic communities, languages and cultures, we document phenomenon of climate change through people’s perceptions and their struggle to adapt to changing weather conditions following stories and characters in Jammu & Kashmir State.

January 2015. The silence and wilderness of Zanskar is shattered by a massive landslide in River Phugtal blocking river at 4000 meters asl in minus 35 degree Celsius. A 14- kilometer long frozen lake threatens to wash away people and villages below.

Gujjars – the nomadic sheep herder felt extreme and critical low temperatures in September 2014 at Zojila pass of  Pir Panjal range while  Kashmir valley was inundated with heavy and excessive rains marooning millions and killing two hundred. Met explained the phenomenon as rare condition.

Heavy rains coupled with warming are receding Glaciers faster than normal. Rongdum, a village in Zanaskar valley reels under shortage of green fodder. Plant Species are vanishing when their life cycles are broken by dry spells.  Drass- the second coldest inhabited place in the world after Siberia is living under  threat of flash floods. . Aryans, a hymn singing community believed to be of Mediterranean origin is experiencing agriculture bonanza amidst changing weather patterns. But Shilikchay Kargil is hard hit with curly moth disease hitting fruiting plants and less snow fall decreasing crucial moistures for seed germination.

Cold and arid Ladakh has put adversaries of climate change to its advantage. A resilient community fights back. Religion and science together   find solutions to climate challenges adapting to altered conditions and mitigating its effects.

We all are immersed in the effulgence of scintillating energy the mother earth  the womb of all creations. She can evolve. Aren’t we?
