The Delhi Union of Journalist expresses its solidarity with protesting journalists of West Bengal at the failure of the West Bengal government to trace the missing journalist, Chayan Sarkar. Sarkar, working for the Uttar Banga Sambad, has been writing extensively on alleged extortion by operators owing allegiance to the Trinamul. It is apprehended that he has been kidnapped due to his continued exposure of an admission racket in Siliguri.
He went missing while on his way to deliver a speech on the threats that he was facing due to his reports. Earlier, his house was ransacked. The DUJ strongly condemns these attempts to muzzle the press in West Bengal. This is not an isolated incident. Many such instances of threats and intimidation to journalists have been reported ever since the TMC came to power in the state.
