WHOSE MASTER’S VOICE?
FM Gold – the number one FM Channel of All India Radio, a trend-setter in the world of radio broadcasting has begun to become a culling zone of its very own presenters. Can we believe that those sweet and husky voices fear being silenced by the tyrannous officialdom of the Titanic organization? The whistleblower presenters are being targeted because they have refused to dance to the dictatorial tunes of the officials who think they are bigger than the law. These presenters have pointed out certain malpractices, and made the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting aware of the sorry state of affairs at the mammoth radio station.
The first to come in the line of fire is Dushyant who has been empanelled for the past seven years. He has been banned for the lifetime.
Reason?
He mistakably announced it was Monday while it was actually a Wednesday.
As soon as he realized his mistake he corrected himself quickly responding to the listeners’ friendly messages.
So? Was it such a big mistake that one should be banned for lifetime?
The inside story is the backdrop of such a cruel and unjust decision.
With a sense of duty and commitment, the presenters have launched a struggle for the respect of the institution and for self respect as well. A representation was submitted to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the ministry actually honoured the representation by sending it to the Director General of All India Radio for favourable action. But these demands by the presenters seem to have fallen on deaf ears. Rather they have started targeting them giving ridiculous reasons.
During live programmes presenters tend to make such mistakes under pressure since they have to face a number of technical difficulties and glitches. Apart from the technical side, the dictates of the officers also contribute to the tension.
The extreme step of banning Dushyant was taken just on a report of a duty officer who himself got retired as an announcer and now enjoying comforts of the duty rooms of FM Channel by the grace of the director,Delhi station L.S.Vajpayee.
At the director’s behest the sycophant duty officer prepared a biased report based on unfounded facts maligning Dushyant . No clarification was sought from him. The duty officer had actually barged in the studio while Dushyant was on air. Even Dushyant tried to remind him of the code of conduct which bars anyone entering the studio while the programme is being aired. He requested him to talk after the show is over. Even he himself apologized for calling the Wednesday a Monday but the duty officer did not relent and wrote a report accusing him of uttering certain things in bad taste about the station director.
There have been efforts in the recent past curbing not only the freedom of the presenters but also to completely destroy the fame earned by the FM Gold channel by allotting it a new frequency and allegedly selling the coveted 106.4 MHz frequency to some private channel (already that frequency is being used by a channel in many regions of the country). Thankfully, the officials could not succeed in their nasty efforts.
Needless to say, this is the darker side of FM Gold which proves that all that glitters is not gold.
