SUB: Resignation for Humiliation

Sir,

I am submitting my resignation today as reporter for ANI in Kolkata. But before leaving I want to inform why I am forced to take this decision.  Before joining here, I have worked for other News Channels but never faced the humiliation that I faced here,  especially from the behaviour of one Ishaan Prakash. I don’t know what  his post in Delhi but he abused me on the phone for no fault. The language he use was abusive and untolerable  even if there is fault.He called me on 16.9.13 because  some problem with the audio during a live interview of Dr Apurva Ghosh, Director Institute of Child Health. He had  knowledge that the cameraman with me was Biswajit Bhakta, but he still yelled and screamed at me instead of the cameraman because as woman he thought I was soft target. He used terms like ‘you bloody  woman’, ‘you useless woman’, ‘you people do nothing, you sit in office’, ‘don’t argue , you have no right to say anything, you can quit’, ‘your cameraman is bloody useless’ etc etc.He abused me on the phone for  almost five minutes on the same theme. It was humiliating as there was no problem with audio and I had nothing to do in how cameraman was shooting. I could have taken the matter to the Women’s Commission as the language was so bad and derogatory. I have double masters,  M.A Journalism from Calcutta Univ. and M.A. English from Rabindra Bharati Univ. with four years experience  in media.  Such abuse from people less educated and bad mannered was never imagined by me. The working terms in ANI have also changed from the time I joined in Dec, 2011. Night shift was started recently from  10.9.2013  under which I was made to work for 20 hours continuously and then getting a break for 12 hours only as the number of staff in  office was not increased to accommodate night shift. Night shift was stopped suddenly on Oct 3rd, after queries from staff on such long duty timings. But  mail by SurinderKapoor sent for that was even more weird. It mentioned duty details like one reporter cameraman for morning, one team for 10, one team for 2 which can go home at 10pm and one cameraman as flexible which made no sense as what will be duty shift for morning team or 10 am team was not mentioned and the ‘flexible’ cameraman what will be his time? All the time I worked with ANI I have done duty for minimum 12 hours every day with no overtime. The idea even now is to make staff work for unlimited time onwards and onwards for 24×7 coverage without overtime or increase in manpower without any question on such practice.  In this matter Surinder Kapoor had said one thing to staff and one thing to Bureau Chief , like Mir Zafar, to create division and not implement proper duty hours or benefits.

 Professionalism is also absent here as many stories I have covered from the distant corners of the state, distant villages and towns and also from Kolkata have been released from Delhi under the name of others staffs and in charge who have not put toe outside air-condition office in Delhi ever to do such stories. Several such stories can be seen on the net. I am sure this is happening with reporters of other Bureaus in ANI. There is lack of proficiency in every bits and corner. Naveen Kapoor  claims that every politician is his ‘friend’ but we got different vibes from his those ‘friend’ politicians,just recently TMC M.P Derek Obrien told me that Naveen Kapoor was asking him to line up reactions and interviews for ANI, he told me  “ why Naveen Kapoor is calling me for lining up reactions of other people I have many work to do rather than lining up stories for ANI” this was so embarrassing for me that I listened those words from a M.P not for my part of fault but for my office wrong doers and this is not good  for me to end up loosing my good contacts which I made over many years effort just because of pushy attitude of Naveen Kapoor.

In News Agency we may not get credit for story I know but credit for story going to others is unheard of anywhere!  After working here so long and doing so many stories I have no body of work to show with ANI but others can show my work as theirs in ANI. This has been most hurtful.  I have also complained many times about mistakes created in my stories by those doing editing but those in charge have not bothered anytime about maintaining any factual creditability or safeguarding against errors in the reports. I find all this very much against Journalism Ethics that I studied in College. I am satisfied that I have finally found the opportunity to put all this in the open. I thank my elder sister Muktanjana Dey and brother- in- law Ranjan Karmakar, both advocates, and my parents, who encouraged me and supported me to find the courage to write this.
