: The veteran actor to perform in the play, Teri Amrita marks his return to theatre after 25 years : The four day celebrated play to be organized as part of Punjabi Theatre Festival in the capital will take place from 19th to 22nd December : Bollywood actress Divya Dutta will play the lead role of Amrita Nigam, along with Om Puri : New Delhi : Enveloped with brilliant acting, remarkable storyline and heart wrenching dialogues ‘Punjabi Theatre Festival’ is all set to make a mark and woo the theatre lovers in the capital. This theatre festival will be treasured for the return of veteran actor Om Puri after a long hiatus of 25 years.
‘Punjabi Theatre Festival’ will showcase Teri Amrita, an adaption to the Indian context of A. R. Gurney’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated play, Love Letters (1988). It has all the ingredients to strike a chord with the audience. The play will prove to be a highlight on the professional journey of celebrated actors like Om Puri and Divya Dutta, who will play the role of Zulfikar Haider and Amrita Nigam, respectively.
“I was very nervous initially when I decided to make a comeback in theatre. I started off with theatre when I was a teenager and was spotted by directors of the Punjab Kala Manch at a college play. Now at this point of life, when I am turning 64, I want to go back to my first love. I want to continue with theater. I want to act and will be producing theater from now on,” says veteran actor Om Puri.
“I have no illusions about myself. It’s very difficult to get good meaningful roles in films today, unless you happen to be a huge star, where roles get specially written for you,” admits Puri.
‘Punjabi Theatre Festival’ will be organized by the Department of Art, Culture and Languages, (Govt. of Delhi) and Punjabi Academy. This initiative is taken by Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi.
“We are very excited to showcase the event. The return of famous actor Om Puri will stir up the audience. We are expecting a huge footfall at the event. I am very thankful to actors like Om Puri and Divya Dutta who have made a comeback to theatre. This will not only promote theatre but will encourage a lot number of famous celebrities to come back to theatre,” said Mr. Rawail Singh, Secretary, Punjabi Academy.
The play stages a conversation via reams of love letters exchanged over thirty-five years, yet Amrita's love remains unrequited. This play aims to strike a chord to the mindset of mature audience, it will touch human emotions at all levels – humour, pathos and irony at various stages of the play. The duration of the play is one-and-half-hour.
The show does not involve any type of backdrop music or fancy sets to charm audience but the simplicity of words rendered with emotions will weave the complex textured fabric of unrequited love – spanning over thirty-five years starting from 1940.
