Ms Mamta Sharma,
National Commission for Women,
Subject- Abjectly sexist remarks on Ms Mayawati by a UP Minister Sri Om Prakash Singh
I am Tanaya Thakur, 2nd year BA.LL.B student of CNLU Patna and R/O 5/426 Viram Khand, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow.
I am writing this letter to bring to your notice a grave matter relating to dignity and respect of women. Recently, I came across a news item in various newspapers where the Hon’ble Uttar Pradesh tourism minister, Om Prakash Singh has allegedly been quoted saying- "Aap log toh bahut bahadur ho. Jab aap log Mayawati jaisi soorat ki aurat ko panch saal tak jhel sakte ho, toh thoda samay toh hum logon ko bhi de sakte ho (you people are very brave. When you can bear with a woman with the face of Mayawati for five years, surely you can give us some time, too)," He further added "Woh (Mayawati) bhrashtachari hai durachari hai…. Mohammed Ghori, Genghis Khan, Ahmed Shah Abdali aur Nadir Shah ne itna nahin loota hoga jitna Mayawati ne akele Uttar Pradesh ko loota (she is corrupt, badly-behaved and a marauder like Ghori, Genghis, Abdali and Nadir Shah).”
I present a copy of the Times of India, Lucknow Edition; dated Friday, June 14, 2013 titled ‘SP minister calls Mayawati names’. The same news has been published in almost all other important newspapers.
Mr. Singh’s statements appear to me and also to various others, as can be seen from the reactions in the newspapers, as being prima facie derogatory and of an uncivilized nature. Such crude and sexist remark about the former chief minister by a minister from the government is completely uncalled for and shows how the women are treated in the society even after receiving such position and stature. In our Indian society, where the women, since the ancient times, are supposed to be treated with dignity and respect, a statement of such uncouth nature is not only unwelcome, but also shocking. We cannot dream of growing as a nation and making a place for ourselves on the world level, if the women of the nation are looked down upon in this demeaning manner.
This matter is of a serious concern also because if a statement of such nature can be delivered against a woman of national importance, such as Ms. Mayawati herself, then it can be very well perceived what the situation of other women would be in the eyes of the Honourable Tourism Minister.
This statement of the Hon’ble Minister is not only violative of the dignity of the women but is also blatantly against the oath taken by him as a Minister and is hence a clear cut case of Misconduct as a Minister of the State government, because this act goes against the basic formulations enshrined in the Constitution of India, especially as prescribed in Articles 14 and 15.
I, as a bidding lawyer and also a women, strongly object to these improper statements and pray you to kindly immediately enquire into the matter and take suitable action against the Hon’ble Minister who grossly violated the societal norms and the sanctity and dignity of the entire womenfolk.
