Complaint against TV channel for Asaram 'aide' slur

GURGAON: A city resident has filed a police complaint against a private news channel for allegedly describing her as an aide of Asaram Bapu in its broadcasts on the sexual assault case against the godman.

The complainant is 35 years old and a devotee of Asaram Bapu who, along with his entourage, visited her house in Palam Vihar on July 3 this year. She alleges the news channel used that footage two weeks ago while it aired a programme on the sexual assault case against the godman and identified her as Shilpi, his close associate.

A Zero FIR, one that can be lodged on the basis of a woman's complaint at any police station irrespective of where the alleged crime took place, was filed on Tuesday against the channel's parent company, its CEO, executive president, and others. Police said the complainant submitted a copy of the footage but didn't know how the TV channel got access to it. The telecast, she alleged, defamed her family and caused her mental agony.
