Paper boy’s news moment

: Rahul encounter brings hope : Bhopal : The man in the newspaper took out a thousand-rupee note from his wallet. There was something about the boy’s eyes…

For Kaushal Shakya, it was a life-changing moment, though Rahul Gandhi wasn’t interested in buying the Hindi daily that had his photograph and comments splashed all over.

That was on April 25. The 11-year-old has since been offered a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000, has helped his father get a job and got an assurance of a seat in a private medical college after he finished school.

It all started when Rahul’s motorcade stopped at a traffic signal in Bhopal. “Akhbar kyon bechte ho? (Why are you selling newspapers?) Do you go to school?” the Congress vice-president asked the boy holding out a newspaper.

Kaushal, who has been selling newspapers at traffic signals for two years now, said he went to a government school and wanted to be a doctor. He said he sold newspapers in his spare time to help out his family of five, including his parents and two sisters. “My father is a labourer and there are days he doesn’t work,” the boy said, asking the VVIP in jeans and kurta to buy the paper.

“Akhbar le leejye. Aap hi ki khabar hai (Please buy the newspaper, you are news),” he told Rahul.

Those who were accompanying Rahul that day said he was moved. He took out his wallet and extracted a crisp 1,000-rupee note. A baffled Kaushal handed over the newspaper to Rahul without taking the note. “I don’t have change,” he said.

Rahul handed over the note. “Please keep it,” he told the boy. “Become a doctor. Never let your dream die.”

Then the motorcade moved on.

Kaushal’s father Dullichand couldn’t believe his ears when his son told him about his brief interaction with Rahul. “Kallu, you actually met Rahulji and he gave you this 1,000-rupee note?” he asked.

His wife suggested keeping the note as a souvenir.

On Friday, when state Congress chief Kantilal Bhuria returned from Delhi, he summoned spokesperson Manak Aggarwal and asked if the party unit could help out Kaushal. Bhuria was among those present when Rahul had interacted with the boy.

While Bhuria was speaking with Aggarwal, some local Congress activists walked in. “We are looking for a peon so why not Kaushal’s father?” said Sajid Ali, a resourceful leader who runs a medical college.

Another leader, Naresh Gyanchandani, said: “If Rahulji could give the boy Rs 1,000 from his wallet, I would be delighted to fund his education.”

Manak then offered to visit Kaushal’s family.

Dullichand was idling around when the Congress spokesperson arrived at his Roshanpura slum dwelling. Soon a meeting with Bhuria was arranged.

As Bhuria hugged Kaushal and offered him a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000 from the state Congress, Ali cleared his throat. He said he was looking for a peon for his medical college. He also said a seat would be kept for his son when the boy, now a student of Class VI, finished school.

When the father and son looked up, eyes moist in gratitude, they saw a giant photograph of a smiling Rahul.
