Send entries for The Laadli Media Awards for Gender Sensitivity 2011-12 (Northern Region)

The Laadli Media Awards were instituted in March 2007 as a Mumbai centric event and were subsequently taken to the national level with the support of the UNFPA. The Awards have been instituted to acknowledge, highlight and celebrate the commendable efforts undertaken by Print and Electronic media (TV, Radio and Web) and Advertising, to support gender-just perspectives. News features, articles, editorials, investigative reports from print and electronic media and ads and jingles from the advertising agencies for products, services and public service announcements are considered for the awards.

News features, articles, editorials, investigative reports from print and electronic media and ads and jingles from the advertising agencies for products, services and public service announcements are considered for the awards.

The entries should: a) highlight the value of the girl child and women in Indian society, b) challenge gender stereotypes, c) analyze social, economic and political developments from a gender perspective, or d) offer alternate interpretations/ perspectives which mobilize public opinion. Multiple entries, even across categories, are encouraged from individuals and media houses (group entry).The entries should be published/broadcast between 1st July 2010 and 31 Dec 2011.

The jury consists of a panel of eminent media personalities. The Northern Region Awards are open to advertising and media professionals/freelancers from Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The last date for receiving entries is 15th July 2012. The Awards will be held in all four Regions of India culminating in the National Awards in Mumbai in November 2012. The Northern Region Awards ceremony will take place in late October.

Laadli is a girl child campaign by Population First, a Mumbai-based NGO working on health, population and women’s issues. Laadli is a term of endearment meaning ‘cherished daughter’ in Hindi. Laadli is a comprehensive communication campaign aiming to promote a positive image of women and girls in society and works with communities, colleges and media to change the

dominant mindsets that undervalue women. Laadli media advocacy includes a number of activities viz., Media fellowships, gender sensitization workshops for working and student journalists, interactive sessions with Creative Directors of TV Channels, Ad analysis with advertising professionals and Creative Excellence Awards for creative and advertising professionals.

The Award ceremony 2010-11 for northern region was held in Delhi. More than 450 entries were received from the states covering northern region. 31 media persons selected by a panel of 13 jury members were felicitated at the event. Dr. Kiran Bedi, IPS, Dr. Ranjana Kumari, Director, Centre for Social Research and Ms. Nobuko Horibe, Director, UNFPA, Asia Pacific presented the awards.
