The Hindu has registered a big increase in its readership, Indian Readership Survey (IRS) data for the 4th quarter of 2011 show. The Hindu has gained 71,000 readers, a growth of 3.3 per cent in national readership from the previous quarter. One of the biggest gainers amongst English dailies this quarter, The Hindu has seen a cumulative addition of 1.45 lakh readers over the past one year. The publication's current Average Issue Readership (AIR) is 22.4 lakh readers. Once again, The Hindu retains its position as the most-read English daily in South India and the 3rd largest English newspaper nationally.
In South India, The Hindu has reinforced its undisputed dominance in terms of readership: its average issue readership has grown by 2.7 per cent. The newspaper has added 50,000 readers in South India in the fourth quarter and stands out as the No. 1 English language daily in the region. In Chennai, where it all began 133 years ago, The Hindu has a readership of 5.43 lakh readers, more than the combined readership of all other English dailies collectively, reiterating its dominance.
In Coimbatore, The Hindu registered a huge increase of 11.2% growth, taking its readership to 99,000, more than the combined readership of all other English dailies put together and four times the readership of The Times of India. The newspaper's readership has grown by a hefty 10.1% in Karnataka and by 9.2% in Kerala. The overall growth in Andhra Pradesh has been 2.3 %. There has been very significant growth in Delhi as well, with The Hindu's readership increasing by 13.4% in the fourth quarter of 2011.

IRS 2011 Q4 further reveals that English weekly and fortnightly magazines as a category have shown growth over the previous quarter. Sportstar and Frontline, from The Hindu Group of publications, have registered an impressive readership growth of 9.7% and 5.6% respectively. This again expresses the trust readers place in the magazines' integrity, credibility and independence, and the value they get from our publications.
