DB Corp net profit up 21% to Rs48.6 cr
New Delhi: DB Corp Ltd, publisher of Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar, said September quarter profit gained 21% to Rs.48.6 crore as circulation revenue increased and cost of newsprint dropped. Analysts said the earnings were as expected and that the outlook for the industry remains dismal. DB Corp’s revenue grew 8% over the same quarter a year ago to Rs.378.4 crore.
“They have benefited slightly from the newsprint coming down,” said an analyst, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to speak to reporters. “Print companies have also taken a cover price hike, which has resulted in higher circulation revenue for them.” The analyst added that “ad growth has been slightly higher than our expectations but it’s (still) pretty dismal, in line with the industry.”
Another analyst, also declining to be named, said DB Corp’s advertising revenue at Rs.282.6 crore was down 2-3% from the June quarter, though it rose 3% from a year earlier. Advertisement revenue for DB Corp’s radio business, which operates under the brand MY FM 94.3, grew 20.3% to Rs.15.3 crore.
The company’s digital business, too, had good growth, with dainikbhaskar.com, divyabhaskar.com, divyamarathi.com and dailybhaskar.com drawing 10 million unique visitors a month.
Collective page views increased to 250 million a month over the past three years. “In an overall challenging environment, we maintained our leadership rank and concentrated on building a better content-oriented product while also developing our radio and digital businesses,” managing director Sudhir Agarwal said in a statement.
Dainik Bhaskar is the most read paper in Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab with over 2.2 million readers, according to the latest numbers by the Indian Readership Survey. DB Corp rose 3% to Rs.222.35 a share on BSE on Thursday, while the exchanges’s benchmark Sensex gained 0.97% to 18,791.93 points.
