This is unfortunate that Hindi Editors do not rise above petty predilections. However it is not aboslutely true that young journalists from cities outside Delhi do not get chance to come and work in Delhi based newspapers. Yes, the old system of hiring fresh University Graduates has been given a go by and tested and tried journalists are being given preference.
This is because no organisation now wants to waste time on training freshers. They only want trained journalists. This system allows a lot of pick and choose. As you also mentioned in your article, a wrong selection would ultimately not bear results. Any newspaper has to survive only on quality of delivery. That means sooner and later such useless appointments of useless guys would become non-performing assets.
However I will not agree that senior journalists would essentially be a liability. Journalism is a profession, where every day there is something new to learn and one is never old.
Any senior person is rather an asset as she/he has a lot of experience and her/ his delivery time and quality is supposed to be better. May be you are talking of field reporting and here elderly persons in their fifties may not be suitable as they may loathe to run around much.
However there is no substitute for experience provided the experienced person is still living with an attitude of constant learning.
I am not aware of what kind of old people Alok Mehta has recruited, but certainly if they are experienced hands then he has shown a great cleverness in poaching talents from places.
Certainly, it is possible to start a Nai Dunia with forty+ wallhas.
