Union Telecom Minister A. Raja finally broke his silence on Headlines Today expose wherein his telephonic conversations with a PR lobbyist openly pitching for a Cabinet berth were aired. But even in the face of growing clamour for his resignation, the minister continued to remain defiant. At a press meet in Ooty, Raja claimed that controversies did not affect him.

“These controversies and allegations are fuel for my working capacity. It is strengthening my hand. Unless and until controversy and debate is there, my efforts will not come out. The controversies are motivated nowadays,” Raja stated. A defiant minister said that allegations and controversies were his driving force. “Controversy will be there unless and until motivation is there. I clarified everything in and outside Parliament,” he added.

A few days ago Headlines Today had we exposed Raja’s real face. In his damning conversations with PR lobbyist Nira Radia he was heard openly pitching for a berth in the UPA-2 Cabinet. In one of the tapes Raja was heard asking whether his case was cleared, to which Radia replied: “Your case is cleared. Your case was cleared last night only.”

Soon after the Headlines Today expose, Raja was summoned to Chennai by DMK leader M. Karunanidhi. With pressure mounting on him, the minister decided to vent his anger on Headlines Today correspondent at the Chennai airport. She was roughed up by Raja’s men when she asked him to clarify his stand on the expose. Later, a brazen and unabashed Raja claimed he was not a fool to be trapped this way in the expose.

“I didn’t see the telecast, I went through the script. Even as per the script, let us assume there is a script, nothing is surreptitious. I am not a fool to believe that a third force can offer a ministerial berth other than Karunanidhi, prime minister and Sonia Gandhi,” he had said. If allegations and controversies are Raja’s driving force and the secret behind his defiance, Raja probably would never run out of fuel.
