New Delhi : Senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes formally launched the Adarsh Community College at the University Tower in Mayur Vihar phase-2. This community college is one of the 100 community colleges to be established under the auspices of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). The college shall have its functional campus at Gangoh town in Saharanpur district of UP. Chief guest of the launching ceremony Mr. Fernandes hailed the initiative and efforts of the Shobhit University in development of a facility which is likely to go a long way in uplifting the lives of languishing communities and classes of the society.

He said, in the present scenario of globalization the demand for technicians and craftsmen is high. Europe alone requires more than five crore workmen every year. If we succeed in training our youth in skills required in the market, we shall be making them internationally employable. He said, the vocations which are so far out of the ambit of formal education and training systems in place in the country need to be identified, recognized and fortified with provision of proper education and training as per the demand of the market. Citing planning commission data, Mr. Fernandes said, in our country every year around 12.8 million people add to the workforce in the market. Out of these, only around 2.5 million people happen to have got proper training. He added that such high influx of unskilled workmen renders a large number of existing workforce jobless ultimately resulting in unemployment and poverty for around 26 per cent population of the country.

Mr. Fernandes emphasized that the Government alone cannot garner resources to handle the situation and more institutions like the Shobhit University need to come forward for turning around the situation. Addressing the gathering on the occasion the Pro Chancellor of the university Kunwar Shekhar Vijendra expressed hope that the Adarsh Community College shall be able to offer the much needed help to the weaker sections in different communities in and around Gangoh. Important among those present on the occasion included Prof. Anoop Swarup, Vice Chancellor of Shobhit University, Prof. Raghuvir Singh, Prof. DPS Verma, Finance Controller of the university Mrs Sangeeta Raj and directors of various schools of the university. The programme was conducted by Dr. MP Gupta, director, International Skill Development Centre.  (Press Note)
