MADURAI: The Usilampatti police on Tuesday filed cases against four persons including DMK functionary Pottu Suresh and assistant commissioner of police S Kumaravel for illegally detaining a journalist. The journalist was detained for writing an article against Suresh’s domination in government sectors during the previous DMK regime.

Police said that the other accused persons have been identified as Suresh’s younger brother Saravanan, Tiruvannamalai DSP S Kumaravel and sub-inspector Parthiban. All the accused had assaulted K Pandyan (34), a Tamil weekly journalist from Thadayampatti village, after he wrote the article against Suresh. during the DMK regime.

In his complaint, Pandyan said his complaint that he was working as reporter with ‘Netrikan’, a political magazine. On October 22, 2009, he had written an article about Suresh, who was behaving as if he was the ‘chief minister’ in the southern districts. This article published on October, 22, 2009.

In fact, the then deputy chief minister M K Stalin, who read the article, condemned the acts of Suresh. Due to this, he also told Madurai district DMK functionaries that he would not come to attend the Vaigai water scheme inauguration function on October 24, 2009.

The DMK functionaries managed to pacify him, following which Stalin attended the function.

Meanwhile, Suresh who was angered by the article, written by the reporter Pandyan informed Kumaravel, then ACP of Madurai city (intelligence wing), who in turn threatened Pandyan over mobile phone. After Stalin’s visit, Kumaravel and his team also went Pandyan’s village and assaulted his father, Karuppaiyah.

Coming to know of this, Pandyan went into hiding. Sub-inspector Parthiban then went to Tirupur and illegally detained Pandyan’s three brothers-in-law.

An angry Suresh filed a false case against Pandyan. with the Tallakulam police station.

He, however, managed to get anticipatory bail. from the court.

Suresh then harassed his family and kept harassing them with the help of police. Suresh and Kumaravel also took Pandyan into illegal detention, to Tallakulam police station, where they brutally attacked him. In the meantime, Pandyan’s father, Karuppaiyah died after hearing about the incident. After coming out of illegal ‘detention’, the victim approached the Ellumalai police for filing a case against the gang, which they refused to do. so.

However, with the political scenario having changed in the state, the Usilampatti police have registered a case against the accused under the IPC Sections 342,365,323,307,109 and 506/2. साभार : टाइम्‍स ऑफ इंडिया
