: कम हो गई है कार्टून की धार : मशहूर कार्टूनिस्ट सुधीर तैलंग की नजर में कार्टूनों में आज विचारों की कमी होती जा रही है,जिससे इसमें अब वह बौद्धिक पैनापन नहीं दिखता जो पहले की तरह सटीक बिंदू पर सीधा प्रहार कर सके। तैलंग की राय में पत्रकारों और नेताओं के गठजोड़ से मीडिया की धार कुंद हो गई है, जिसका नतीजा यह हो रहा है कि मौजूदा दौर का कार्टूनिस्ट महज ग्राफिक्स डिजायनर या इलस्ट्रेटर बन कर रह जाता है।
करीब तीन दशक से तमाम अखबारों के लिए कार्टून बना रहे तैलंग ने कहा कि सत्ता का प्रभाव इस कदर हावी होने लगा है कि कई मीडिया हाउस आलोचना से बचने का रास्ता चुन ले रहे हैं, उन्होंने कहा कि यह राजनीति में आ रही गिरावट का ही तकाजा है कि आज हर प्रधानमंत्री छह महीने बीतते बीतते कार्टूनिस्टों के ब्रश के दायरे में आ जाता है। तैलंग कहते हैं, “ऐसा लगता है जिसकी भी लॉटरी खुल जाए वह देश का प्रधानमंत्री हो सकता है। देश के कई प्रधानमंत्री इसकी मिसाल हैं।
न्यूज़ एक्सप्रेस के मंथन कार्यक्रम में तैलंग ने बताया कि उनका फेवरेट कैरेक्टर भी देश के प्रधानमंत्री रह चुके पी वी नरसिम्हाराव थे। तैलंग ने कहा कि उनके चेहरे से लेकर व्यक्तित्व का हर हिस्सा कार्टून के लिए बेहद उपयुक्त थी। उन्होंने लालू यादव को कार्टून के हिसाब से मुश्किल कैरेक्टर बताते हुए कहा, कि जिनकी लाइफस्टाइल ह्यूमरस हो उसका कार्टून बनाना ज्यादा मुश्किल है।
जब तैलंग से उनके कार्टूनों के राजनीति और समाज पर असर के बारे में पूछा गया तो उन्होंने कहा, “मुझे ऐसा कोई वाकया याद नहीं आता। राजनेता चिकने घड़े की तरह होते हैं, उन पर किसी बात का शायद ही असर पड़ता हो।” तैलंग ने एक और वाकये का जिक्र किया, “एक बार मैंने ऑटोवालों पर सीरीज बनायी। पता चला कि उन ऑटोवालों के लाइसेंस रद्द कर दिये गये।”
न्यूज़ एक्सप्रेस के सदस्यों से बातचीत में तैलंग ने कई दिलचस्प बातें भी बतायीं, मसलन : उनके पास एक मंत्री के पीए का फोन आया की मंत्री जी आपसे बेहद नाराज है। “जब मैंने कहा कि हाल फिलहाल में उनका कोई कार्टून नहीं बनाया फिर कैसी नाराजगी। पता चला नाराजगी की वजह तो यही थी कि छह महीने में उन पर कोई कार्टून नहीं बनाया।” तैलंग ने बताया कि केद्रीय मंत्री एमएस गिल को कार्टूनों का बहुत शौक है। गिल को उनके बनाए कार्टून इतने पसंद हैं कि उन्होंने कार्टून अपने बेड रूम में लगा रखे हैं।
पद्मश्री पुरस्कार से सम्मानित सुधीर तैलंग ने कहा कि राष्ट्रपति का पद हो या किसी और का जिस किसी पद की भी गरिमा पर आंच आएगी वो खुद ब खुद कार्टूनिस्ट के ब्रश के दायरे में आ जाएगा। दस साल की उम्र से कार्टून बना रहे सुधीर के मुताबिक एक कार्टूनिस्ट जर्नलिस्ट और आर्टिस्ट का कंबिनेशन है, लेकिन वो जो भी सीखता है खुद से सीखता है। उन्होंने कहा कि कार्टूनिस्ट को हर रोज कुछ नया करना होता है, जो काफी चुनौती पूर्ण है। तैलंग ने बताया कि जो नेता धोती पहनते हैं उनके कैरीकेचर बनाते वक्त धोती भी उतनी ही महत्वपूर्ण होती है जितना की उनका चेहरा।

अब पत्रकारिता की जगह चाटूकारिता और दलाली हो रही है। यानि चाटूकारिता को ललितकला के रूप में पेश करे तो और भी तरक्की मिलती है..
सुधीर तैलंग साहब ने सही बात कही है. वास्तव में कार्टूनिस्ट का ओहदा सम्पादक के समकक्ष होता है और कहीं कहीं तो सम्पादक से भी ज्यादा, लेकिन मीडिया की धार कुंद हो जाने के कारण अब संपादकों का ही वजूद मामूली रह गया है. सच्चा, तीखा, पैना कार्टून छापने के लिए सम्पादक में कलेजा चाहिए और अब जिस तरह से कम्पादक नाम की संस्था का महत्त्व कम हो रहा है, उसमें पीने कार्टून की जगह चुटकुलेबाजी वाले रेखांकनों की जगह ही बची है, वरना अब भी बहुत अच्छे कार्टूनिस्ट हैं और बेहतरीन काम कर रहे हैं.

Yes, I was invited to share my views and idea on the art of cartooning and my world of satire, with the senior staffers of the News Express Channel. It was a fruitful interaction with the channel’s bright core team and I enjoyed it.
This report ( of the same interaction) in your Website has some views attributed to me which I never expressed! So, This is my small request to you to please edit and insert the small corrections. Thank you.
The heading itself is quite misleading. What I said was—
“ WE have had a great tradition of cartooning in this country. Political cartooning has always been an important part of our vibrant democracy and the media.
In the past decade or so, things have gradually changed. The biggest casualty of the trivialization of the Media is:
“Opinion”. Independent thinking and Views have slowly been edged out of the mainline media.
Cartooning is a negative art-form ( Although the ultimate aim is a positive one!) It’s an art of dissent, an art of protest, so the element of attack is inherent it it. It’s bound to offend and hurt someone mighty. But that’s the core strength and the beauty of cartooning.
So, it’s becoming inconvenient to have a cartoonist and let him lose! The Media-Politics-Business nexus has played a crucial role in the slow disappearance of the art-form from a position of importance. The cartoon has been elbowed out by Rakhi Sawants, Cricketers and the Cinema Stars from the front-page.
A cartoon is essentially a visual editorial. It can look good on a page but it’s real aim is not to decorate but to jolt the reader out of his easy complacence. It is an embodiment of the spirit of a true democracy. He is the spokesman of the common man.
In recent years we have seen a trend that in order to beautify and decorate the pages, newspapers have more illustrators, graphic artist and cartographers. That’s fine, we have no issues here. The trouble is the most coveted space which was reserved for serious political cartoons, has gone to the graphics and maps .
Very few newspapers display cartoons on the front-page .
We have some of the best cartoonists working in our newspapers today and they continue to draw devastating cartoons – both in English and language papers. The only difference is cartoonists of the generation of Laxman and Abu, and later on, my generation- got the prime-time display! Not any more.
A very pertinent question was asked by News Express Channel Head and my friend Mukesh Kumar. He asked, “If it’s all about the TRPs, then why is the cartoon that does get a guaranteed 100 percent TRP,
not getting prime exposure?”
That’s a very relevant question. The reason is: Cartoon is a WMD ( a weapon of mass destruction). So the media is reluctant to risk it—despite the great TRP potential.! (A Rakhi, or a map, is always a safe bet!)
But I am pretty optimistic. Because the worst period in the life of any nation is the best for its cartoonists! And at a time when the country has a-scam-a-day government ruling us — Can there be an opportunity better than what History has offered us on a platter–for the revival of this great art -form ?!
India is truly a paradise for cartoonists.
PS- It’s Mr MS Gill who has my cartoons (of him ) in his bed room—Not Mr MM Joshi ( incidentally both are great cartoon lovers and my admirers, like many other politicians ( and my victims!) across the spectrum!)

30-35 saal mein hazaron carttoon banae. cartoonist ki naukari bhi ki, parantu cartoon ke saath-saath akhbar ki platen bhi banana sikhna pada, pesting bhi sikhna padi, vigyapan bhi aur kahaniyon ke liye skech bhi, tab jakar kahin cartoonist ki naukri kar saka. Baad mein jab peer, bavarchi, bhishti ka kam karna hi tha to sabse pahle cartoon banana band kiya brush ko ek taraf rakhkar kalam pakad li. Jinda rahane ke liye yah anivarya tha. (Un dinon (1975-80) mein pratidin 70 Paise mein keval ek bar hi khana khata the, do bar ki gunjaish hi nahin thi.) Madhya Pradesh ke akhbaron mein na pahle cartoonist ki jarurat thi aur na aaj hei. Yahan aaj bhi jo log cartoonist ka kam kar rahe hein vo log sabhi tarah ke anya kam bhi karte hein.Yadi Madhya Pradesh mein koi sirf cartoon banane ka kam kar rahe hei to use mera salam.Jinda rahna bhai.
