डॉ निशीथ राय (प्रोफेसर, कुलपति, संपादक) को मालूम था उनके पास वक्त कम है। ये तस्वीर इसी मार्च महीने की है, बेटे की शादी के मौके की। चेहरे पर कैंसर का कोई तनाव-ग़म नहीं! सिर्फ छह महीने में ही वे शरीर त्याग देंगे, इसका तनिक अंदाज़ा किसी को न था।
एक बेहद अनुशासित व्यक्ति जिसने कभी किसी किस्म का नशा नहीं किया, उसे कैंसर ने क्यों पकड़ा, शोध का विषय है। उन्हें जीवन से बहुत प्यार था। लेकिन जब काफ़ी फैल चुके कैंसर के बारे में देर से पता चला तो उन्होंने ख़ुद को समेटना शुरू कर दिया था। वे योद्धा थे। हर प्रतिकूल स्थिति से शांत तरीके से निपटते।
उनकी आख़िरी ख्वाहिश थी पुत्र का आईएएस बनना और उसकी शादी होते हुए देखना। दोनों इच्छाएँ उनकी पूरी हुईं। उन्होंने मुझसे कैंसर वाली बात बहुत पहले शेयर कर दी थी। लेकिन मुझे तनिक आईडिया न था कि उनके पास वक्त इतना कम है। बहुत सारी बातें हैं। मेरे लिए पर्सनल लॉस है।
डेली न्यूज़ एक्टिविस्ट हिंदी दैनिक अखबार उनका पैशन था। इस अखबार के कारण उन्होंने कई क़िस्म के दिन देखे। सरकारी प्रताड़ना उत्पीड़न सब झेला। भड़ास की टीम उनके साथ कंधे से कंधा मिलाकर खड़ी थी। वे मिलने पर हर बार कहते भी थे कि जब सभी लोग सरकारी दमन देख कर डर कर दुबक गए थे तो यशवंत और उनकी भड़ास की टीम खुलकर समर्थन में उतरी।
वे भड़ास की टीम के हिस्से बन गए थे। हम लोगों के सुख दुख में शरीक होते। भड़ास के कई आयोजनों में शामिल होने लखनऊ से दिल्ली आए। आज हम लोगों ने अपना एक सच्चा दोस्त और अभिभावक खो दिया। उनकी मुस्कुराहट और बातचीत का स्नेहिल अंदाज़ हमेशा याद आता रहेगा! श्रद्धांजलि भाई साहब!

When my advocate friend Rajiv Mishra, the son of veteran HMS Trade Union leader Uma Shankar Mishra, broke the sad news over the phone about the death of Dr. Nishith Rai this afternoon, I could not believe my ears.
I was blissfully unaware that Dr Rai was suffering from a deadly cancer. Dr. Rai was the first Vice-Chancellor of Shakuntala Mishra Vishwavidyalaya in Lucknow. He had his higher education at Allahabad University, where his father, Dr. Raj Kamal Rai, was a very renowned Professor of Hindi. He was also the founder and editor of the Daily News Activist newspaper.
Another reason for my close association with him was that he belonged to Maunath Bhanjan District, which was once part of my native district, Azamgarh. His father, Professor Raj Kamal Rai, was very close to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and Neta Ji Raj Narain.
I handled two of his cases—one in the Supreme Court and the other in the Press Council of India. Although I never asked for any fees from him, he paid me reasonably well in both cases. He was very close to Mulayam Singh Yadav but maintained some distance from his son, Akhilesh Yadav.
Once, at a programme of the IFWJ in Lucknow, he told me that he had to be called before the Chief Minister, as he had to go to the university. I called him first to speak, as per his wish. Later, the Chief Minister referred to him in his speech.
He is survived by his wife, a son who is an IAS officer and is married to an IPS officer and a daughter, who is an Assistant Professor at Lucknow University. Prof. Rai also served as the Director of the Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies, Lucknow, since 2005. A soft-spoken and clear-headed Dr. Rai was very helpful to all those who came into contact with him. May God grant his soul eternal peace!
