The CBI is set to initiate inquiry against six high-ranking officials of Prasar Bharati — India’s public broadcaster — for financial impropriety and bungling of funds. The step, sources said, comes after the Central Vigilance Commission found discrepancies in the operations of Doordarshan Kendra, Srinagar.
The information and broadcasting ministry is understood to have granted sanction to the CBI for initiating enquiry against these six officials by the agency. Interestingly, all six officials are believed to have been posted in the Srinagar centre of Doordarshan. Sources said that the officials being probed include ranks from deputy director-general to executive producers of programmes who are also being investigated for impropriety in commissioning of programmes for the “Kashir” channel.
Highly-placed sources stated that the financial mismanagement was noticed in an investigation by the CVC after a complaint regarding the same was received by the anti-corruption watchdog. It was found that some private production houses were being favoured by the officials under investigations, they added. The programmes under the lens have been produced for Doordarshan’s Kashir channel, a dedicated channel for Jammu and Kashmir. Sources further said, “The investigative agency may also be asked to check into commissioning of programmes to some Delhi-based companies who were awarded contracts while denying others of the same”. Some cases of corruption have been found in Doordarshan and All India Radio in the last five years and the authority concerned initiated action as provided under the Rules, sources said. “Around 10 officers of Group ‘A’ have been charge sheeted for major penalty proceedings by the ministry of I&B in the last five years”, sources said.
Earlier, the CBI had registered a preliminary enquiry against a senior official of Doordarshan to probe alleged misconduct for making excess payment to a private firm in 2008. The agency had probed the role of a senior Doordarshn official who allegedly made excess payments to outside artists during his tenure with the national broadcaster. There were allegations that the suspected official, belonging to the production side of the national broadcaster, and others had committed gross misconduct by allegedly making excess payments to outside artists for a programme during 2006 to 2008.
