DUJ Condemns Journalist’s Arrest… The DUJ views with serious concern the arrest of journalist Arnab Goswami by the Maharashtra police. We condemn the growing tendency of state governments to file FIRs against journalists and arrest them arbitrarily. Such actions are an infringement of the right to free speech and expression.
According to a report of the Delhi-based Rights and Risk Analysis Group (RRAG), as many as 55 journalists “faced arrest, registration of FIRs, summons or show cause notices, physical assaults, alleged destruction of properties and threats” for reporting on COVID-19 or “exercising freedom of opinion and expression during the national lockdown between March 25 and May 31, 2020.”
This number has gone up sharply since then, with arrests and other coercive actions for exposes of corruption in PDS and medical supplies to hospitals, tweets against various politicians and other issues. In a few cases, the higher judiciary has granted anticipatory bail or temporary stay on arrests.
Three Delhi journalists have been arrested in recent months. Prashant Kannojia was arrested on August 17, 2020 and spent over a month in a UP jail for a tweet. He is currently on bail. Rajeev Sharma was arrested on September 19, 2020 for alleged spying activity. Siddique Kappan was arrested on October 9, 2020 while on his way to report on the Hathras rape case and stands accused under UAPA.
The Delhi Union of Journalists condemns the increasing powers given to the police and other agencies to arrest, intimidate, beat up and harass journalists. We demand the speedy enactment of a special law to protect journalists and media freedoms.
गिरफ्तार हुए पत्रकार की पत्रकारिता का समर्थन नहीं करता। चौथे स्तंभ का सम्मान करता हूं। लोकतंत्र का काला दिन है! महाराष्ट्र सरकार और मुम्बई पुलिस ने जिस तरीके से आज एक पत्रकार को घसीटते हुए अरेस्ट किया निंदनीय है। मुम्बई पुलिस की कार्यशैली से पता चलता है भर्ष्टाचारी और डरपोक है! 2018 के ipc 306 केस को पहले तो बंद कर देती है। जिनकी मौत हुई उनको न्याय नहीं देती। लेकिन जब वहीं पत्रकार इनकी परत दर परत पोल खोलता तो बिना समन और नोटिस के ak-47 से लैस पुलिस कर्मियों के साथ एनकाउंटर स्पेशलिस्ट के नेतृत्व में गिरफ्तार करती। क्या पत्रकार आतंकवादी है? क्या वह डकैत हैं? पत्रकार गलत हो सकता, उसकी पत्रकारिता एजेंडे वाली हो सकती! किन्तु ऐसे गिरफ्तारी की घोर निंदा होनी चाहिए। जब मर्डर कर सलमान खान को फूफा की तरह व्यवहार करते, संजय दत्त जो एक अपराधी था जेल काटी उसको आका की तरह बैठती है तो मुम्बई पुलिस पर सवाल तो खडे ही होंगे। सबसे पहले तो मुम्बई पुलिस को उन अधिकारियों को गिरफ्तार करना चाहिए जिन्होंने केस बंद कर दिया था। अगर पत्रकार की प्रताडऩा से किसी की मौत हुई है तो देश में सरकारों के कारण रोज किसान, बेरोजगार आत्महत्या कर रहे उन सब पर केस होना चाहिए! अपराध का सबसे बडा कारण बॉलीवुड है। बेटियों के साथ हो रही घटनाओं के जिम्मेदार इनके द्वारा परोसी गई अशलीलता है करों इन पर केस!

Gauhati Press Club (GPC) condemns the arrest of Editor-in-Chief of Republic TV Network Mr Arnab Goswami. Reopening of an old case of abetment to suicide that was closed for want of evidence, and arresting Editor In Chief of Republic TV Network in connection with the said case is very unfortunate. The manner in which Mr Goswami was arrested clearly leaves room for suspicion towards witch-hunting.
Members of the GPC executive committee who met today at the Club premises while condemning the arrest of Mr Goswami urged the Maharashtra Government and the Mumbai Police to ensure that the senior journalist is treated fairly without a prejudiced mindset. “We have full faith in the justice delivery system of our country and hope that justice will be done,” Sanjoy Ray, general secretary, GPC said in a statement.
Meanwhile, GPC also expresses its concern over the recent developments in Jammu and Kashmir and urges the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure that no bonafide journalist is harassed in the name of investigation by the National Investigation Agency, which is probing the terror funding case

Arrest of Arnab is an attempt to gag Media: NUJ(India)
New Delhi November 04, 2020: – The National Union of Journalists (India) strongly condemns the illegal arrest of noted journalist and Editor-in-Chief of Republic Media Network Arnab Goswami.
According to information the forcible entry of the Mumbai police into the residence of Mr Goswami without serving him any prior notice or summons to appear before it is a clear violation of Supreme Court Guidelines. Besides, it appears an attempt to subdue and throttle the freedom of speech and expression by misuse of the police force by the Maharashtra Government.
The misuse of the police force to gag the media, the fourth estate of democracy, is highly dangerous. Television footage shows Arnab Goswami, manhandled by the police, desperately pleading for medical advice and praying for seeking legal opinion from his lawyers. But he was denied that opportunity. This is highly inhumane, heartless and illegal, too.
NUJ(I) President Ras Bihari & Prasanna Kumar Mohanty, Secretary General, National Union of Journalists (India) said that the misuse of police shows that it has become the tool of choice to silence criticism. We condemn the arrests of Arnab Goswami Editor-in-Chief Republic TV. NUJ-I believe that due to the political reasons, the government of Maharashtra is persecuting the TV channel’s journalists. We urge the Prime Minister to intervene in the matter.”
