This post is about Shweta Kothari and saffronisation of IIMC, a premier media institute. Shweta is one of those few credible faces in media fraternity today. She has worked in multiple TV channels as well as the Managing Editor of The Logical Indian.
She recently tweeted that She’s going to teach Media & Ethics in different courses of IIMC. But it’s sad to hear that her next class got immediately cancelled and it’s highly possible that she won’t be allowed to teach now.
Sources told me that She was shamed by HJ course Director Rakesh Upadhyay for her Facebook post and tweet where She called out mainstream TV channels. Prof Upadhyay showed her tweet to the students of Hindi Journalism and said that “She’s coming to teach Ethics? What would She teach? Does She know anything about Ethics? Has She ever worked in mainstream media?”
He further said that She’s coming to teach in a Govt institute. She’ll get salary from the Govt only. How can She write against this Govt or PM? As a professional how can She speak against that media where students are going to work in future?
The sets a grave precedent of arbitrary suspension of faculties just coz they are critical of the regime. Isn’t this shameful of how a women is ashamed for her tweets amongst student by a male professor?
IIMC adminstration should take cognisance of this incident and it must be ensured that Shweta is allowed to take the classes as decided. Also a disciplinary action must be initiated against Rakesh Upadhyay for his misogynist remarks.

There was a circular in IIMC back in 2017 which directed the institute staff and students to not report or write a single word against the government. One of the most awesome teachers on this planet that I know of resigned from his job after reading it. If there’s no freedom of speech, what’s the point of journalism?

My alma mater IIMC has turned into a propaganda machinery. Gone are the days when our professors taught us how a journalist should always be anti-establishment. Those professors are gone too, or mellowed down to keep their government jobs. Misogyny and bigotry have always been there but it started become more visible with yagyas and Sudhir Chaudhuri being invited as chief guest to events, instead of Ravish Kumar despite winning Magsaysay. Whatever happened with Shweta is outrageous but she hasn’t set a “precedence”. Arbitrary suspension of faculty has also been going on for last couple of years. The rule is simple – be a mute subject to the fiefdom or get sacked.

Soma Basu IIMC loosing all it’s reputation now. All the Course directors got replaced by some newly appointed people and they really don’t deserve to be in IIMC. After cracking such competitive exam and paying such high fees students deserved better.
