Panaji/Mapusa: Senior journalist Rupesh Samant, an alleged accused in sexual harassment cases, is reportedly avoiding police questioning by not appearing before the investigating officer. According to police, sixth summons was issued to Samant asking him to appear before the investigating officer for questioning later in the day; however he did not turn up.

The summonses were served at the residence of Samant at Altinho-Panaji and were received by his family members, police said, adding that, whereabouts of Samant are not yet known. It may be recalled that a total of four FIRs have been registered at the city women police station against Samant in connection with alleged sexual harassment. The first FIR was registered on September 24. Women journalist including one woman employee of an organisation are complainants in the cases.

Fearing arrest, Samant had approached court seeking anticipatory bail and the hearing is scheduled on October 6. Meanwhile, on Monday, the additional sessions court directed police to provide the first information report (FIR) copies to Samant. The court at Mapusa has imposed conditions on the use of FIR copies by the alleged accused.

When the matter came up before the additional district sessions court, advocate Sunita Nagvenkar, who appeared for police, objected to providing FIR copies to Samant saying that the matter is sensitive and giving FIR copies would lead to leakage of details. While the alleged accused’s lawyer requested court to grant copies under sections 74 and 76 of the Evidence Act. After hearing arguments, the judge directed the police to give copies of two first information reports (FIR) and imposed four conditions on the use of FIR copies.

“We have collected the copies of the two FIR registered against the alleged accused from the police station and subsequently two more FIRs were filed and we have also moved the application to furnish the copies of those. The order on that is likely to be passed on Tuesday,” said Raju Povlekar, lawyer, representing the alleged accused.
