New Delhi : The Delhi Union of Journalists and its Gender Council severely condemn the attack on the studios of the Chennai based Tamil TV news channel Puthiya Thalamurai by Hindutva elements.
The DUJ is shocked by the growing intolerance and violence resorted by such outfits to create terror. DUJ believes that the bomb attack is typical of the attempt by fringe elements to grab the spotlight and urges media to be responsible in its reportage and coverage of such incidents, so that they are discouraged from such violence.
The DUJ notes that the channel was targetted merely because it wanted to carry a programme on whether women should continue to wear the thali or mangalsutra in contemporary India. It is evident that Hindutva forces insist on reinforcing and reviving many traditional patriarchal practices, in a throwback to the past. The DUJ warns that such attacks on media freedoms are attacks on India’s democratic, plural culture and must not be tolerated. DUJ calls for immediate, firm action against the culprits behind this violent incident.
