लखनऊ । प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय में मीडिया सलाहकार रहे व एनडीटीवी के पूर्व सम्पादक पंकज पचौरी ने आज यहां कहा कि स्वास्थ्य को चुनावी मुद्दा बनाया जाना चाहिये। वे यहां उत्तर प्रदेश राज्य मान्यता प्राप्त संवाददाता समिति द्वारा आयोजित मीडिया कार्यशाला को सम्बोधित कर रहे थे। कार्याशाला में एनआरएचएम व गोरखपुर में मस्तिष्क ज्वर से हर साल हजारों बच्चों की मौत का मुद्दा जोर-शोर से उठा। उत्तर प्रदेश राज्य मान्यता प्राप्त संवाददाता समिति व स्वयंसेवी संगठन ग्लोबल हेल्थ स्ट्रेटजीस के सहयोग से एक होटल में आयोजित मीडिया कार्याशाला में राजधानी के प्रमुख अखबारों के सम्पादकों व वरिष्ठ पत्रकारों को सम्बोधित करते हुए श्री पचौरी ने कहा कि देश में स्वास्थ्य संबंधी खबरों को प्राथमिकता नहीं दी जाती जबकि यह विषय सीधे तौर पर हमारे देश की अर्थव्यवस्था से जुड़ा हुआ है। उन्होंने कहा कि ब्रिटेन यूरोपीय संघ से इसी मुद्दे को लेकर अलग हुआ और अमेरिका में राष्ट्रपति पद के लिए हुए पिछले दो चुनाव और इस समय चल रहे चुनाव प्रचार में प्रमुख मुद्दा स्वास्थ्य ही है।
श्री पचौरी ने कहा कि प्रदेश में स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं का बुरा हाल है। यही कारण है कि यहां की प्रति व्यक्ति आय भी भी काफी कम है। उन्होंने मीडियाकर्मियों से इस मुद्दे पर आगे आने की अपील करते हुए कहा कि स्वास्थ्य संबंधी खबरों के जरिये हमें राजनीतिक दलों पर दबाव बनाना चाहिये और यह प्रयास करना चाहिये कि स्वास्थ्य का मुद्दा सभी राजनीतिक दलों के चुनावी घोषणापत्र में प्रमुखता से शामिल हो।
कार्याशाला को सम्बोधित करते हुए संवाददाता समिति के अध्यक्ष प्रांशु मिश्र ने कहा कि समिति के जरिये वे पत्रकारों को इस मुद्दे पर जागरूक करने का प्रयास करेंगे। उनकी कोशिश होगी कि इस तरह की कार्यशालाओं के जरिये पत्रकारों को स्वास्थ्य संबंधी खबरों के आंकड़े भी उपलब्ध कराये जाएं। नवभारत टाइम्स के सम्पादक ने कहा कि उनका मानना है कि स्वास्थ्य संबंधी खबरों को मुख्य एजेंडे में शामिल करने का काम अखबार में शीर्ष पर बैठे लोगों द्वारा तय होना चाहिये। उन्होंने पत्रकारों के प्रशिक्षण पर विशेष बल दिया। रायटर के विशेष संवाददाता शरत प्रधान ने स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं में व्याप्त भ्रष्टाचार का मुद्दा उठाते हुए कहा कि प्रदेश में यह मुद्दा राजनीतिक दलों के मुख्य एजेंडे में नहीं है क्योंकि इससे उन्हें अपने वोटबैंक पर कोई फर्क पड़ता नजर नहीं आता।
दि ट्रिब्यून की वरिष्ठ संवाददाता सायरा नईम ने बताया कि इस मुद्दे पर वह बीते कई सालों से काम कर रहीं है, वहीं जनमार्चा की संपादक सुमन गुप्ता ने कहा कि इस जागरूकता अभियान में जिले के पत्रकारों को भी शामिल करना चाहिये। 4 पीएम के सम्पादक संजय शर्मा ने गोरखपुर में बीते दस वर्षों में मस्तिष्क ज्वर से दस हजार से अधिक बच्चों की मौत का मुद्दा उठाते हुए कहा कि उन्हें समझ में नहीं आता कि आखिर इतनी बड़ी समस्या पर हर राजनीतिक दल मौन क्यों है।
कार्यशाला को हिन्दुस्तान टाइम्स की सम्पादक सुनीता एरन, नवभारत टाइम्स के मनीष श्रीवास्तव,पायनियर के अभिषेक रंजन व सुबहनामा के अशद रिजवी ने भी संबोधित किया। कार्यशाला में वरिष्ठ पत्रकार मुदित माथुर, नीरज श्रीवास्तव, मनमोहन राय, कामना हजेला, अजय श्रीवास्तव व मनोज भद्रा भी उपस्थित थे। इससे पूर्व मीडियाकर्मियों को प्रदेश की स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं के बारे में विस्तृत रिपोर्ट पेश करते हुए ग्लोबल हेल्थ स्ट्रेटजीस की निदेशक शिल्पा नायर ने कहा कि वे समय-समय पर पत्रकारों को स्वास्थ्य संबंधी आंकड़े उपलब्ध कराती रहेंगी।
Media Roundtable on Why Healthy Women and Children need to be at the Centre of UP’s Success Story
The Uttar Pradesh State Accredited Correspondents Committee (UPSACC)organized a Media Roundtable at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Lucknow. The eventsaw an overwhelming participation by senior journalists, Lucknow-based editors and bureau chiefs of leading state and national level print and electronic news outlets. The gathering was held to discuss the media’s constructive role in highlighting issues related to Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) and Nutrition and apprise them of the positive developments in the health and nutrition landscape across the state with the hope that these issues may find voice through informed journalism and greater editorial space.
Pranshu Mishra, President, UPSACC, said,“The UPSACC hopes to use its platforms to raise the discourse on key issues that confront the state of Uttar Pradesh. Health is directly related to the demographic dividend and the growth of the state. It is important that informed, accurate and consistent journalism happens on the issues of the health of mothers, children, newborns and their nutrition.”
It was revealed to the attendees that preventable diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia kill tens of thousands of children in UP every year. Yet still, over half of all children under 2 years of age in UP are at risk of contracting such preventable diseases due to poor immunization compliance. More than 650 children die of malnutrition in the state every single day and more than 90% of adolescent girls in the state are anemic, placing them at a greater risk of becoming weak mothers, with weak babies in the future.
Shilpa Nair, Project Director, Global Health Strategies, outlined the current landscape of RMNCH+A and nutrition in Uttar Pradesh. She added that “Though indicators such as Infant Mortality Rate and Maternal Mortality Ratio are on the decline, there is still much work to be done at both the programmatic and policy level on these issues.”
It was discussed how the media should continue to focus on maternal, child and adolescent health and nutrition related issues especially in the run up to the next assembly elections which usually witnesses a shrinking of space for such issues.
Mr. Pankaj Pachauri, former Media Advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office of Manmohan Singh and former editor, NDTV, explained how there is a need for editorial prioritization of these issues irrespective of the usual brand of news stories that normally dominate the headlines. “Global politics is increasingly being influenced by issues of health. Be it the recent exit of Britain from the European Union or the US presidential elections. It is important that journalism on health drives the political agenda in the upcoming elections in UP”.
The event also saw a frontlinehealth workerand gram pradhansharing their experiences about how they used thoughtful and innovative strategies to overcome gaps and challenges in the health system to ensure quality health care services reached their communities.
Sudhir Mishra, Resident Editor, Nav Bharat times said, “For informed and accurate health journalism, it important that journalists both current and aspiring, are trained to report on the technical aspects of health.”
Representing the Urdu media, Asad Rizvi from Subahnama said, “It is vital to make health related information available to the masses in their language so that they could benefit from increased awareness on schemes and practices.”
In the end it was decided that media organizations from leading state and national level organizations will practice informed, evidence based and consistent journalism on these issues, in which they will focus on exposing gaps in the system while also highlighting the various successes in public health at the community and higher levels. A plan for sustained dialogue on these issues was put in place in the form of similar Roundtable meetings on a bi-annual basis. The participants also agreed upon the use of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp for the dissemination of accurate information on maternal and child health and nutrition issues.
