हमलावरों ने रविवार की प्रार्थना के दौरान योहानाबाद इलाके में स्थित रोमन कैथोलिक चर्च और क्राइस्ट चर्च को निशाना बनाया, जिसके बाद वहां भगदड़ मच गयी और आतंकित लोग अपनी जान बचाने के लिए भागे।     विस्फोटों में एक पुलिसकर्मी समेत कम से कम 14 लोग मारे गए और महिलाओं तथा बच्चों समेत करीब 68 लोग घायल हो गए। घायलों को लाहौर के जनरल अस्पताल में ले जाया गया है।     

डॉन की खबर के अनुसार, शुरुआती रिपोर्टों में पता चला है कि दो आत्मघाती हमलावरों ने हमले को अंजाम दिया। हमले में कथित रूप से शामिल एक युवक को गुस्साई भीड़ ने पीट पीट कर मार डाला और उसके शव को आग लगा दी। विस्फोट स्थलों से दो संदिग्धों को गिरफ्तार किया गया है।

तहरीक-ए-तालिबान पाकिस्तान से अलग होकर बने समूह जमातुल अहरार ने आज के हमले की जिम्मेदारी ली है। पाकिस्तान के सबसे बड़े ईसाई रिहायशी इलाके योहानाबाद में कम से कम दस लाख लोग रहते हैं। पाकिस्तान में अल्पसंख्यक समुदायों को लंबे समय से चरमपंथियों और आतंकवादी समूहों द्वारा निशाना बनाया जाता रहा है। वर्ष 2013 में पेशावर के कोहाटी गेट इलाके में आल सेंटस चर्च पर दो आत्मघाती हमलों में 80 लोग मारे गए थे और 100 से अधिक घायल हुए थे।

Lahore church blasts: Taliban attacks kill 14, enraged residents lynch two suspects : Lahore: Fourteen people were killed and more than 70 injured when two Taliban suicide bombers attacked churches in Pakistan on Sunday, sparking mob violence in which two other suspected militants died. Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) splinter group Jamatul Ahrar claimed responsibility for the twin blasts near Saint John Catholic Church and Christ Church in Youhanabad area, the country’s biggest Christian locality, housing at least one million people. 

According to the reports, the blasts went off minutes apart in a majority Christian suburb of the eastern city. Police said it seemed they targeted two churches, one Catholic and one Protestant, that are very close to each other. Police have cordoned-off the entire area and the injured were shifted to Lahore General Hospital. The condition of several wounded is reported as critical. A large number of people have gathered at the hospital.

As per reports, the enraged crowd has beaten up an unknown person at the site of the blasts. Eye witnesses claim the individual was involved in the attack. According to sources, some unknown miscreants opened fire near one Church after which the blast occurred whereas a suicide bomber explode himself outside the second Church on being stopped at the gate. Meanwhile, protesters have launched a demonstration outside General Hospital against the Punjab government. Sloganeering continues against the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The enraged protesters demand accountability, and said proper security was not provided to the churches, a Dawn report said.  

Members of the Christian community also took to the streets and staged protests in Karachi’s Esa Nagri area against the bomb attacks on churches in Lahore, as per media reports. Lahore is the capital of Punjab, Pakistan’s wealthiest and most populous province and the political heartland of PM Nawaz Sharif. The city is generally considered peaceful compared with many other areas of Pakistan, but violence there has been increasing after the government’s failed attempts to hold peace talks with the Taliban last year.

The Christian community in Pakistan has long been the target of attacks and hate crimes carried out by extremist elements. In 2013, twin suicide attacks were carried out at the All Saint’s Church in Peshawar’s Kohati Gate area, killing 80 and wounding over 100 others.
