Demands a law to protect working journalists
The Mumbai Press Club strongly condemns the attack on a female reporter and a videographer of Marathi news channel ZEE 24 Taas. The two were covering action against illegal structures in Digha in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, when they were mercilessly assaulted.
Reporter Swati Naik told Mumbai Press Club that her colleague Sandeep Bharti was attacked by a furious mob when he was filming action being taken by law enforcement agencies and civic authorities. Bharti was grievously injured and hospitalized, while Swati is being treated by the doctors. The Zee 24 Taas team was in the process of filing a police report.
The Mumbai Press Club demands that the culprits be identified and arrested immediately by the police. It also demands that protection should be given to media persons who need to be saved from unprovoked attacks.
The Mumbai Press Club reiterates its demand for making a stringent law to protect working journalists and demands that the state government should pass the law in the forthcoming Budget Session of the Maharashtra Legislature.
