NUJ(I) & TUWJ demands proper compensation and demand for judicial inquiry
New Delhi September 26, 2020 : The National Union of Journalists (India) affiliated to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has strongly condemned the murderous attacks on journalists in Tripura. According to reports a young Journalist was subjected to physical assult at Barpathari Bazar in Belonia when he was covering CPIM-BJP clash at about 11 am in the morning. Suman Nag, a young Journalist working for Agartala based daily “Pratibadi Kalam” and local TV ” Live24″ was photographing the clash.
Suddenly one goon allegedly a BJP man attacked Suman punching him on his face resulting in damage of his camera. The other Journalists covering the incident came to his rescue but could do very little. Other goons soon joined the attacker. Even after the assurance of the Honourable Governor of strong action, the attacks on the media men remain unabated in the state.
Prasantha Chakraborty, Secretary NUJ(I) and General Secretary, Tripura Union of Working Journalists Prasantha Chakraborty said that the matter was reported to the DM Belonia and a strong protest was staged by the scribes. The DM has assured action but no sign of action govt side is visible. A FIR has been lodged and copy has been forwarded to the DM and other officials.
We also attract the attention of the Honourable Governor and Chief Minister and urge them to intervene in the matter so that situation is not aggravated further and ensure a free atmosphere for the media people in the state. TUWJ will draw the attention of the Chairman of Press Council of India and Union Home Minister for their immediate action in this regard.
NUJI President Ras Bihari and Bhupen Goswami Vice President said that journalist was attacked and beaten in Belonia by miscreants and political GUNDAS. He said that there has been a lot of resentment in the media struggle of Tripura over attacks on journalists. Earlier, NUJI secretary Prashant Chakraborty’s house was attacked and demolished.
In a statement they have demanded Chief Minister Biplab Dev to order a judicial inquiry immediately, expressing concern over the fear being faced by journalists in Tripura. Along with this, demanded strict action against the negligent policemen and compensation amount for the scribe. We condemn the barbaric attacks on the media and demand immediate arrest of the person’s responsible for the attacks.
