IPL on TV loses sheen, sees second lowest ratings in last 6 seasons
The TV viewership numbers of Indian Premier League 2023 haven’t delivered good news for the broadcaster Disney Star.
As per the BARC data released for the opening match of Indian Premier League, the broadcaster garnered a reach of 22% [BARC, M15+ AB India Urban], compared to 18.3% reached recorded for IPL 2022 and 23.1% recorded for IPL2021. If one were to take the data for OOH and FTA channel (Star Utsav Movies) out of the equation, then the reach for the opening match of IPL Season 16 is 19.9%, which is the second lowest in the last 6 seasons.
As far as engagement for the opening match of IPL 16 is concerned, at 33% it is the second lowest TVS in the last 6 seasons of the T-20 tournament [BARC, M15+ AB India Urban]. IPL 15 had registered a lower TVS of 30%.
When it comes to ratings, even with the inclusion of OOH and FTA channel (Star Utsav Movies) data, the opening match has seen the second lowest TVR of 7.29 in the last 6 seasons [BARC, M15+ AB India Urban]. The lowest TVR in the last 6 seasons was recorded in IPL 15, which was 5.57.
Disney’s Star has retained the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) television rights for the Indian subcontinent for the 2023-27 cycle in a deal worth
$3 billion approx. The digital rights however are with JioCinema.
As per a press release issued earlier this week, JioCinema broke records with the highest weekend views ever at 147 crores, according to Viacom18.
The company disclosed that viewers spent an average of 57 minutes per match. Time spent per viewer per JioCinema match surged by 60 per cent from last season’s debut weekend, when three matches were streamed on Disney+ Hotstar.
The platform gained 10 crore new viewers and five crore app downloads during the IPL weekend that started on 31 March, according to the company.
