To cry foul when a journalist is arrested on what are evidently serious charges that require investigation & to allege that this is a case of an attack on the freedom of the press is wrong & does injustice to the essence of journalism-the pursuit of truth.
No journalist is above the law. Press associations & journalists do no favour to this great profession by shielding journalists from accountability for their actions that have nothing to do with the publications they work for. The two FIRs against Mahesh Langa are not filed on the basis of reports filed by him
the hindu & are for other charges that require further investigation.
It is unfortunate that this incident centering solely on an individual answerable in his private capacity for his own actions, has taken on the colour of an attack on press freedom & said to be a violation of his journalistic rights.
In what way is his freedom of expression as a journalist being attacked? If we really care about the sanctity of press freedom, we should ensure that such freedom is not abused to shield anybody from facing the consequences of breaking the law.
Journalists have an obligation to stay true to the canons of reporting, to maintain distance from their news sources, to ensure transparency in their dealings with business & political contacts so that the content they offer the public is untainted by commercial considerations. It is vital that reporters & editors welcome such investigations into their dealings, it will enhance their moral credibility when they come out unscathed.
The respect that journalism as a profession commands and the trust that millions of readers & users place in our news content deserve the highest standards of probity. Nothing less.

महेश लंगा के खिलाफ दो एफआईआर उनके द्वारा दर्ज की गई रिपोर्ट के आधार पर दर्ज नहीं की गई हैं.
द हिंदू और अन्य आरोपों के लिए हैं जिनके लिए आगे की जांच की आवश्यकता है.
यह दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण है कि यह घटना पूरी तरह से अपने स्वयं के कार्यों के लिए निजी क्षमता में जवाबदेह व्यक्ति पर केंद्रित है, जिसने प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता पर हमले का रंग ले लिया है और इसे उनके पत्रकारीय अधिकारों का उल्लंघन बताया है.
एक पत्रकार के तौर पर उनकी अभिव्यक्ति की आज़ादी पर किस तरह से हमला किया जा रहा है? यदि हम वास्तव में प्रेस की स्वतंत्रता की पवित्रता की परवाह करते हैं, तो हमें यह सुनिश्चित करना चाहिए कि किसी को भी कानून तोड़ने के परिणामों का सामना करने से बचाने के लिए ऐसी स्वतंत्रता का दुरुपयोग न किया जाए.
पत्रकारों का दायित्व है कि वे रिपोर्टिंग के सिद्धांतों के प्रति सच्चे रहें, अपने समाचार स्रोतों से दूरी बनाए रखें, व्यावसायिक और राजनीतिक संपर्कों के साथ अपने व्यवहार में पारदर्शिता सुनिश्चित करें ताकि जो सामग्री वे जनता को पेश करते हैं वह व्यावसायिक विचारों से बेदाग हो. यह महत्वपूर्ण है कि पत्रकार और संपादक अपने कामकाज में ऐसी जांच का स्वागत करें, इससे उनकी नैतिक विश्वसनीयता बढ़ेगी जब वे बेदाग सामने आएंगे.
एक पेशे के रूप में पत्रकारिता को जो सम्मान मिलता है और लाखों पाठक और उपयोगकर्ता हमारी समाचार सामग्री पर जो भरोसा करते हैं, वह ईमानदारी के उच्चतम मानकों का हकदार है. कुछ कमी नहीं.
