The National Alliance of Journalists(NAJ) and the Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) and Andhra Pradesh Working Journalists Federation (APWJF)expresses its heartfelt condolences at the death today in Trivandrum, of veteran journalist , humanist, activist, and writer, BRP Bhaskar, due to age related ailments. He was 92. Popularly known as ‘ Babu Bhaskar ‘, besides being an activist for human rights and dignity of journalists.

Babu Bhaskar as he was popularly called was a winner of several Awards and had just completed a book. He laid the foundation of a good bureau in the UNI with brief stints in the Patriot, the Hindu, Deccan Herald and for a while in the Asianet channel too. His was indeed a life to be celebrated for he began at the age of 20 and had worked in several papers from the Patriot , associated with freedom fighter Aruna Asaf Ali, among others to stints in to Deccan Herald and even as a journalist activist. Many treated him as a legend and once when he was victimized in the UNI even journalist unions and news workers including the Delhi Union of Journalists held lightening protests. He also guided the undivided journalists’ movement and was secular to the core. He won the Kerala Sahitya Academy Award last year. His biography is called ‘News Room’ and recent book is called ‘The Changing Mindscape’. He had been Vice President of the Delhi Union of Journalists.

In our opinion the NAJ and the DUJ said: “He is indeed a complete life to be celebrated, for he always stood for what he believed in, kept writing till the very end and had a penchant for protesting for causes he believed in and in battles won and lost.”
