Hyderabad on monday witnessed a massive protest and rally against the illegal ban imposed on Tv9 and ABN news channels in Telangana State for the last 25 days.
Raising voice against the action of MSOs under the alleged influence of the Telangana State Government people from various sections of the society not only condemned the MSOs move but also demanded immediate response from the government against such ill attitude.
Political leaders from various political fronts, student unions along with social organisations came ahead to support the media whose freedom has been bluntly attacked in the newly carved state of Telangana.
The protest and rally was peacefully held to raise the voice and seek intervention of the concerned authorities to ensure airing the news channels. Despite making representations and holding meetings with government ministers and officials the requests seems to fall into deaf ears.
Police arrested thousands of persons who participated in the rally and detained them.
It might be mentioned that TV9 has been running a political satire called “Bullet News” since 6 months. One of the episodes of this daily show aired last month had a segment on newly elected MLAs of Telangana State. The Chief Minister Mr K Chandra Sekhar Rao on the floor of the house condemned the news segment by the stating that the content of the segment degraded the newly elected MLAs. The Chief Minister himself moved a resolution against TV9. The State Assembly entrusted the Speaker to take action against TV9.
TV9 not only issued unconditional apology to the Speaker and also MLAs concerned but also aired apology on air immediately after it was brought to the management’s notice. The political satire programme was taken off air from the channel.
Even though, the apology was made and the petition against TV9 is pending before the Speaker, MSOs have imposed ban on telecast of TV9. They have also stopped the telecast of ABN Andhra Jyothi, calling it Anti-Telangana Channel.
It seems that this ban have been imposed at the behest of some influential persons belonging to the ruling party i.e, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS). Many TRS leaders have been critising and disapproving few news channels. It is evident that some people are trying to curtail the independence of media. There seems to a deep-rooted conspiracy behind the ban on these two channels, media persons feel.
MSOs imposed ban on telecast after a statement was made by the Chief Minister Shri K Chandrasekhar Rao in Telangana Assembly against these two news channels. It is being said by MSOs through various media channels that these two news channels had telecast news items which were against the interest of people of Telangana.
