BBC will cut around 1,000 jobs by April 2017, vying to close a $235 million budget gap, the British broadcaster announced Thursday.
The media giant hopes to save a projected $78 million (50 million pounds), through layoffs in human resources, IT, and marketing and legal, it said. The broadcaster also plans to cut layers of senior and middle management.
“A simpler, leaner BBC is the right thing to do and it can also help us meet the financial challenges we face,” said Tony Hall, BBC director-general, in a statement.
The announcement comes after the publicly funded media corporation has been restructuring to cope with a changing media landscape.
The media monolith started in 1922 as a radio station and today operates in over 200 countries — with 96% of the UK population tuning in at least once a week. About 25 million UK residents pay more than $225 in yearly fees for the right to watch live TV.
But revenue from those fees has grown slower than projected the past five years, as more British households have “cut the cord” — dumping their television sets to watch shows online after they’ve aired.
