SC stays proceedings against Aroon Purie
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court stayed criminal proceedings against India Today group head Aroon Purie, which was initiated against him for publishing a cover photo in Business Today in 2013 showing Indian cricket team captain M S Dhoni as Lord Vishnu. Agreeing to hear Purie’s plea, a bench of Justices J S Khehar and N V Ramana directed additional chief metropolitan magistrate of Bengaluru not to proceed in the case filed by a VHP leader for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
Senior advocate Amrendra Sharan and Sanchit Guru, appearing for Purie, contended that the entire complaint against him was false and baseless and it was filed merely to harass the petitioner. They also pointed out that a similar complaint was filed in Pune which was dismissed by the lower court. Purie approached SC after Karnataka HC refused to quash the proceedings against him. VHP leader Yerraguntla Shyam Sunder had filed a complaint objecting to the picture in which Dhoni — in the garb of the deity — holds various products including a shoe in his hands.
