राज्यसभा टीवी से सप्पल ने दिया इस्तीफा

Gurdeep Singh Sappal : राज्यसभा टीवी से मेरा इस्तीफ़ा….

‘चलो कि इक उम्र तमाम हुई
उठो कि महफ़िल की शाम हुई
जुड़ेंगे नए रिंद, अब नए साज़ सजेंगे
मिलेंगे उस पार, कि नए ख़्वाब बुनेंगे।’

राज्यसभा टीवी के साथ मेरा रिश्ता आज ख़त्म होता है। लेकिन संतोष है कि जो चैनल हमने सजाया है, उसकी चमक दूर से भी दिखायी देती रहेगी। आज मुड़ कर देखूँ तो एक सुखद अहसास ज़रूर है कि जो ज़िम्मेदारी मजबूरी में स्वीकार की थी, वो कुछ हद तक पूरी हुई। सच कहूँ तो ये काम मुश्किल ज़रूर था, लेकिन विश्वास था कि ‘अगर अतीत ब्लैकमेल योग्य न हो, आज कोई भय न हो और भविष्य से कोई आरज़ू न हो’, तो जीवंत संस्थाएँ बनाना सम्भव है।

जब हमने ये चैनल डिज़ाइन किया तो दो टैग लाइन चुनी: Knowledge Channel of India और Democracy at Work. आज छः साल बाद ये एक निर्विवाद सच है कि देशभर में छात्र, प्रशासक, बुद्धिजीवी RSTV देखते हैं। तथ्य तो गूगल सभी दे देता है, लेकिन विश्लेषण, अंत:दृष्टि और हाशिए पर रहे विषयों के लिए राज्य सभा टीवी ने अपनी अलग जगह बनायी है।इसकी डिबेट में सभी राजनैतिक रंग, सभी विचारधाराएँ बराबर खिली हैं। शायद, कुछ हद तक ही सही, हम अपनी दोनों टैग लाइन पर खरे ज़रूर उतरे हैं।

मैं जानता हूँ कि हमारे कुछ आलोचक, या कहूँ कि निंदक भी रहे हैं। लेकिन शायद उनमें से ज़्यादातर हमारा चैनल देखते नहीं थे, क्योंकि उनकी आलोचना के बारे सोचते ही एक शेर बेसाख़्ता याद हो आता था :

‘वो बात जिसका सारे फ़साने में ज़िक्र न था,
वो बात उनको बहुत ही नागवार गुज़री।’

हाँ, इन्फ़ॉर्म्ड आलोचना को हमने हमेशा स्वीकारा और उस पर अमल किया।

ख़ैर, ये दास्ताँ बस इतनी ही। मैं शुक्रगुज़ार हूँ माननीय उपराष्ट्रपति श्री वेंकैय्या नायडू जी का, जिन्होंने मेरा आग्रह मान कर मेरा इस्तीफ़ा स्वीकार किया।

लोग संस्था को गढ़ते हैं और संस्था लोगों को गढ़ती है। मैं चैनल के अपने सभी साथियों का धन्यवाद करता हूँ, जिन्होंने मेरे साथ मिल कर ये चैनल गढ़ा और उसे ऊँचाइयों तक पहुँचाया। और अंत में, धन्यवाद उस शख़्सियत का, जिसकी निस्वार्थ मौजूदगी, बौद्धिक विश्वास और स्वायत्ता में नैसर्गिक यक़ीन RSTV की बुनियाद रहा। शुक्रिया श्री हामिद अंसारी, भारत के पूर्व उपराष्ट्रपति का। सम्पादक के पद को वे हमेशा एक महत्वपूर्ण संस्था मानते आए हैं और मुझे ख़ुशी है कि मैं उनके विश्वास पर खरा उतर सका। मेरी कामना है कि आने वाले दिनों में RSTV यूँ ही उत्तरोत्तर तरक़्क़ी के पथ पर आगे बढ़ता रहे।

Resignation from RSTV

Today, as I stand relieved from the posts of CEO and Editor-in-Chief of Rajya Sabha Television, I thank Hon’ble Sh. Venkaiah Naidu, the Vice President of India for accepting my request relieving me from the responsibility. I have always held a principled view that if one has been nominated, rather than having been elected in polls or selected through exams, one must move out with the principal.

As I move ahead in life, I look back in satisfaction at the success we had in creating a vibrant public broadcaster. RSTV, indeed, has made its mark. Having nurtured it since its conception, developing a free and fair public broadcaster was indeed a difficult task. But there was a certain belief that ‘if the past cannot be blackmailed, the present doesn’t scare and there are no expectations from the future’, then it is possible to build robust institutions.

We conceptualised RSTV with two tag lines, viz. ‘Knowledge Channel of India’ and ‘Democracy at Work’. Today, it’s an undisputed fact that students preparing for competitive exams, intellectuals, administrators and thinking population watch the channel. In today’s day and age, facts can all be googled, but RSTV carved a special place for itself by featuring comprehensive analysis & insights and giving space to marginalised, yet significant, subjects. It’s debates gave equal place to views and ideologies of all hues. I believe that we have been able to justify our both tag lines.

I know that we have our share of critics and castigators. But after going through their objections for so many years, I can surely say that most of them don’t watch RSTV regularly. I can only say to them: ‘वो बात सारे फ़साने में जिसका ज़िक्र न था, वो बात उनको बहुत नागवार गुज़री है।’

Whenever we received constructive criticism, we always took its cognizance and strived to accommodate it. Friends, institutions are crafted by people and then institutions craft them back. I was backed by a wonderful set of professionals, who made RSTV what it is today. I thank them all for being my co-passengers on this roller-coaster ride. I thank my Editorial Team for believing in an idea and delivering it.

I also thank my team in administration, who minimized the lethargy and constraints of our public funded systems and delivered a vibrant institution. And above all, I would like to thank one person whose selfless presence, intellectually driven sense of security and innate faith in autonomy was the foundation of Rajya Sabha Television. I profusely thank Sh. Hamid Ansari, the former Vice President of India. He believed in the institution of the Editor and allowed me to live up to it. I wish the channel a bright future, always 🙂
