The PMO (Prime Minister’s office) has asked the Union Labour Ministry to coordinate with the State Government of Uttar Pradesh for the implementation of the Majithia Award. In a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the IFWJ requested him to immediately intervene and ensure the implementation of the Majithia Award which has already been notified by the Government of India on 11.11.2011. The writ petitions filed by the newspaper proprietors against the recommendations of the Majithia Award were also dismissed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India on 07.02.2014.
However, most of the newspapers have failed to implement the Award. That is why, a bunch of contempt petitions have been filed by the newspaper employees in the Supreme Court. The Court has taken cognizance of it, and has directed the State Governments to file the status report with regard to the implementation of the Wage Board. It is highly regrettable that many of the State Governments, including the State of U P, have not filed the status report till date. As a result of it, the newspaper employees across the country are undergoing through great hardships.
In the mean time, most of the newspapers, particularly like Dainik Jagran, Dainik Bhaskar, Rajasthan Patrika, Nai Duniya, Prabhat Khabar, Eenadu, Hindustan Times have started harassing and victimising the employees by transferring, suspending and terminating.
In a communication to the IFWJ, the Union Labour Ministry has said that the primary responsibility of the implementation of Award lies with the State Government and therefore the Ministry is asking the Govt. of Uttar Pradesh to ensure the implementation of the Award.
