DUJ Condemns Sackings by the Big Business Press
The Delhi Union of Journalists severely condemns the recent sackings of journalists in a leading business daily. Not content with a round of firings in the early months of the pandemic, citing business losses, newspapers seem to have decided on another round in the New Year.
The Hindustan Times and its business daily Mint have reportedly let go of several staffers. Hindustan Times has sacked two correspondents from its political bureau and four journalists from its Features section, besides three designers and photographers in Delhi. The Mint has similarly sacked two political reporters and five journalists from its editorial team.
It is ironic that while the press, particularly business dailies, are now claiming that the economy is well on its way to recovery and when the stock market skyrocketing, newspapers should choose to arbitrarily sack more employees. The initial firings in 2020 have left many journalists unemployed and this is yet another blow to the profession over and above the toll taken by the Covid virus.
