पौने दो सौ साल पुरानी लंदन की The Economist समाचार पत्रिका विश्व पत्रकारिता का जाना माना नाम है. इसे दुनिया के बड़े से बड़े नेता, उद्योगपति, नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता, वैज्ञानिक इत्यादि पढ़ते हैं. इसकी साख New York Times और Wall Street Journal से भी ऊपर ही है.

The Economist ने अपने ताज़ा अंक में भारत पर एक लंबी रिपोर्ट लिखी है. रिपोर्ट का सार ये है कि नरेंद्र मोदी भारत में लोकतंत्र ख़त्म कर रहे हैं. पत्रिका कहती है कि मोदी सत्ता के भूखे हैं और सारे नियम क़ानून ताक पर रख कर भारत में विरोधी पार्टियाँ खत्म कर रहे हैं.

रिपोर्ट कहती है कि भारत दुनिया के उन चार देशों में सबसे ख़राब हाल में है जहाँ लोकतंत्र को ख़तरा है. बाक़ी तीन देश हैं पोलैंड, हंगरी और तुर्की.

रिपोर्ट में सुप्रीम कोर्ट को भी लोकतंत्र विरोधी बताया गया है. लिखा है कि सुप्रीम कोर्ट अर्नब गोस्वामी को चौबीस घंटे में बेल देती है लेकिन तिरासी साल के फ़ादर स्टैन स्वामी को पानी पीने के लिए स्ट्रॉ तक नहीं देती है.

रिपोर्ट कहती है कि दसियों हज़ार अल्पसंख्यक जेल में सड़ रहे हैं मगर सुप्रीम कोर्ट के कान पर जूं नहीं रेंगती है. साथ ही अदालत ने electroral bonds क़ानून, CAA से लेकर कश्मीर तक के मुक़दमों को अदालत ने लटका रखा है.

UAPA, RTI, जनरल बिपिन रावत, चीनी अधिक्रमण पर मोदी की नींद, चुनाव आयोग, बिकाऊ मीडिया, कपिल मिश्रा, दिल्ली पुलिस द्वारा मुसलमानों की गिरफ़्तारियाँ, इत्यादि पर भी तीख़ी टिप्पणी की है.

रिपोर्ट के कुछ अंश ऐसे हैं —

Mr Goswami spent just a week in detention, and his case had hardly reached the lowest rung of courts, yet the country’s topmost judges ignored the court’s backlog of some 60,000 cases to schedule a bail hearing within a day of the anchor’s appeal. This is in a country where prisons hold twice as many inmates awaiting trial, some 330,000 people, as they do convicts.

Out of more than 550 writs of habeas corpus such as Mr Goswami’s that Kashmiris filed, courts have disdained to look at all but a handful.

Many cogs in India’s institutional machinery are not merely complacent, but have grown complicit in a project that threatens to turn the country into a one-party state.

Top officers in the police force, which before Mr Modi’s government stopped releasing statistics comprised just 2% Muslims in a city with a 13% Muslim minority, had been filmed standing next to a BJP politician at a rally where he threatened to attack protesters, mostly Muslims, holding a peaceful sit-in against the new citizenship law. During the violence, police were filmed throwing rocks and torturing captured Muslim youths. More than two-thirds of those beaten, shot and hacked to death were Muslim. Yet Delhi’s finest have declined to register complaints against bjp members for incitement. Their investigations have focused on a purported Islamist-Marxist conspiracy to foment unrest in order to embarrass Mr Modi at a time when he was hosting President Donald Trump.

Even the impartiality of the Election Commission of India (eci), with a sterling seven-decade record of managing the mammoth logistics of Indian votes, has come under scrutiny.
