SUICIDE DEATHS MAKE POLITICAL CAPITAL… BJP, Sena see alike on poll gains from suicides… Just like the alleged Sushant Rajput suicide abetment case was played up for electoral gains by the BJP prior to the Bihar elections by using nodal investigative agencies, the current Mohan Delkar suicide death is gaining spotlight in the Lok Sabha by-polls to the Union Territory of Dadra Nagar Haveli for the benefit of BJP’s one-time saffron ally turned foe, Shiv Sena. Even after eight months, the prime accused Praful Khoda Patel is still at large and the Maharashtra government is yet to make even the first arrest.

The Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli which is slated to witness a by-election for the Lok Sabha seat on October 30 this year promises to be a keen tussle between the one-time saffron allies who are now daggers drawn, namely the BJP and the Shiv Sena. The Sena on its part has chosen to field late Mohan Delkar’s wife Kalaben as its candidate. Mohan Delkar had in his suicide note, early this February in a South Mumbai hotel alleged abetment to his bid on ending his life. In view of Delkar being a seven-time MP from the area having sizable following to end on a winning note even when he contested as an independent, the Shiv Sena is looking for electoral gains in a virgin territory by lending moral support besides an election ticket to the aggrieved Delkar family.

Delkar was reported to have informed in his suicide note that he had chosen Mumbai as the venue for his bid, as he cannot be assured of a free and fair investigation into his suicide abetment in the Union Territory controlled by a BJP administrator Praful Khoda Patel. Other members of Patel’s team too were listed in the suicide note. The tussle between the former saffron allies is a keen one as BJP too has chosen a local strongman having influence with the local tribal population, namely Mahesh Gavit. The BJP candidate too has a good track record to his credit having favourably contested the panchayat elections.

What makes the tussle interesting is that the Shiv Sena’s promise to act promptly and arrest those who were alleged to be in the list of people mentioned in Delkar’s suicide note has so far drawn a nought despite more than eight months having slipped by. This status quo prevails despite the Shiv Sena MP Vinayak Raut’s attempt to raise the issue in parliament during zero hour. Raut who raised the question also sought intervention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to act speedily in the interests of justice, by promptly sacking the accused officers named in the suicide note.

A long story got cut short, when Kalaben formally joined the Shiv Sena and her candidature was announced in the presence of the Party chief Uddhav Thackeray. Uddhav’s son Aditya was also present at the venue. Kalaben and her son Abhinav who have become part of the local Sena outfit expect remedial action in the form of justice by affecting the arrest of the accused in Mohan’s suicide abetment case. By way of action from authorities, the Mumbai police have already lodged a FIR based on the statements recorded from the Delkar family survivors.

The issue at stake prior to his suicide death was that Delkar had repeatedly communicated in written correspondence to Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah about harassment he was facing at the hands of administrator Praful Khoda Patel. In the suicide note, the charges hurled against the accused persons was much graver, stating he was also faced with an extortion bid that intimidated him to part with INR 25 crores. Delkar also alleged attempts to dissuade him from contesting for the by-elections on part of the accused administrator. With no action being seen on ground, and the survivors of Delkar family seeing hope of obtaining justice once Kalaben gets elected on the Party ticket, the Sena has its fingers crossed at present.

“We are demanding a judicial inquiry. We are demanding immediate dismissal of the Administrator of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Praful Khoda Patel, who is extremely close to Shri Narendra Modi, who is extremely close to Amit Shah.”
