PRESS STATEMENT ON IT RAIDS ON DAINIK BHASKAR, BHARAT LIVE

MUMBAI 26 July: The Mumbai Press Club deplores the continuing attacks by the Union and some of the state governments aimed at overawing and demoralizing sections of the Indian media for refusing to fall in line with the government’s perspective.

In recent days, we have seen a series of coordinated income tax raids on the Dainik Bhaskar Group and a UP-based TV network, Bharat Live. Not only have company offices and promoters’ homes been raided, but the homes of editors and ordinary journalists too have not been spared.

As justification, the agencies have been citing allegations of tax evasion, but the timing of these raids is too precise to miss the signal to the entire Indian media: that if you carry stories of government ineptitude and failure, this is what you will have to face. In the case of Bharat Live, after days of harassment, there is not even a claim from the government side that anything incriminating was found.

It is a fact that these two primarily Hindi language networks have been focusing on a large number of Covid-19 deaths, and more particularly on the fudging and down-playing of actual numbers and the enormity of the human tragedy. The widespread income tax raids on these companies and their journalists are a direct assault on the Indian media and aimed at gagging whatever free and independent news coverage exists in the country.

Earlier, journalists have been jailed, and new laws such as the Digital IT rules have been framed, bringing media companies under the oversight of the higher bureaucracy. This is dangerous in a democracy.

The Pegasus revelation has further shown that the phones of journalists and others have been penetrated and snooped upon. This is a serious and illegal invasion of privacy. Though the government is not named, the software is sold only to governments. Significantly, the Union government has not accepted the demand for an independent, Supreme Court-monitored investigation in this matter. On the other hand, the government has dismissed the demand, as always, as a conspiracy of anti-national forces against India.

We demand that this intimidation be stopped, and journalists are left to do their jobs without fear or favour. The fourth estate is a pillar of democracy, and such actions will only undermine it.
