Five million Indian desis live in America. This woman works in one of the most liberal industries in a most liberal state. She’s got the best of work deals. And yet she’s claiming she experiences racism regularly.

I have now lived in America for four years. I live on the ground, work on the ground. I go to government offices, I deal with people in stores and shops, I go to many places where I come face to face with white people, such as libraries, schools, parks, etc. My work regularly takes me to very uppity white places such as Capitol Hill. Never felt unwelcome.

I cannot say I have experienced even one incident of racism. In fact, I live in a predominantly white neighborhood. All I see around me are white people. They have been incredibly and naturally welcoming to us. I am now a member of a club with all-white people. I am the only non-white there. Not only do they not misbehave with me, they have opened their hearts and homes to me and my family. And they made me vice-president of the club because they said they want me to be a leader in the community.

Surely there must be racism in some parts of the country. It’s a big country and has the world’s third largest population at 350 million. But I can say from my experience I have never experienced racism. I believe I am smart enough to pick up racism if it comes my way.

In fact, the truth is, the American people, including the white people I meet and work with, have been so matter-of-factly accepting that I cannot help but compare almost on a daily basis with how hostile people in India are to people who do not look like them or eat like them or dress like them, including other Indians.

It’s amusing how so many people commenting on this post are questioning my own experience. The first para in the post is about Priyanka Chopra. Even in that para I do not say she is right or wrong. All I say is that she gets top work and claims of racism. The rest of the post is about my experience. Everyone is trying to tell me that my experience is shit, that I don’t know better. In the English language, this is called gaslighting. As for suggesting that brown people or women cannot be questioned because of their color and gender, there are any number of brown people and women and brown women and gay people also lying and cheating, no different than any other color and gender and sexual orientation. The best example is George Santos, a gay Republican whose lies have hit epic proportions. Nobody has shied away from calling him out because he’s gay. Jussie Smollet. Google him, people. A black celebrity who lied about a racist attack. The black comedians roasted him. Women lie, too. Should Priyanka Chopra’s xenophobia also not be called out because she is a woman? Or brown?

I have lived in America for four years. That’s not too long a time compared with the stays of most Indian Americans I meet here. Most Indian people my age either come to the US to spend time with their children working here, or have lived here since their 20s or 30s moving shortly after college or a few years of work.

I am sort of a unique case in that I came to work in America in my 50s after a 32-year professional life in India. Naturally, that has made me a rare Indian bird in America with a unique way of viewing both India and America and comparing one with the other. Those who moved here in their 20s and 30s did so with little adult experience in India. Those among them who are in their 50s now came decades ago from an India that was very different from today’s India. They came to an America decades ago that was very different from today’s America.

Most such people remember India from their childhood or youth of two or three decades ago. Their real adult experiences have mostly been as an American.

There is another near uniqueness about my America experience. Because of my work, I have traveled extensively throughout the US, despite the much shorter stay. Most Indian Americans stay in one city or two cities over decades, traveling occasionally as tourists, or even traveling on business to one or two locations, unless they are in sales. But due to my work, I travel at least 10-12 cities a year, and multiple times.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

In just four years, I have traveled to multiple cities multiple times in states such as Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Georgia, California, Washington, Texas, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland (where I live), Missouri, Washington, DC (where I work), Connecticut, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana, Ohio, Philadelphia, and New Mexico. In addition, I have driven through Colorado, Kansas, Arkansas and Mississippi.

And my travels are not restricted to meeting a couple of people in one office. I travel mostly to engage with local communities, mostly Indian American Muslims but also Hindus, Christians and Sikhs. I also meet local politicians such as city council members, county board members, state lawmakers and even federal lawmakers. I meet with Asian American as well as black and white American activists. I meet with university professors, attorneys, trade unionists, businessmen, doctors, engineers, sheriffs, firemen. In one city, I met with judges. I meet men and women and children.

I am also a professional speaker as a subject matter expert and so I speak at many events. I have spoken at events with over 10,000 people in attendance. I have spoken to groups of 20 people. I have spoken at churches and gurdwaras, in mosques, in city halls. In more than 30 American states I am no more than two degrees of separation away from the State governor or a town sheriff or a city council member.

So I have a fairly decent experience of engaging with America. I will not and do not claim my experience is superior to others’ experiences. Nor do I say that I have figured out America like no other. But I do know that of the hundreds of Indian Americans I have met nobody has told me that they are everyday victims of racism. Does that mean that Indian Americans do not face racism in America? I am sure many have faced racism here. Especially the desi children born and raised in the US may have experienced comments and responses from their classmates.

But I will be surprised if the racism that the Indian Americans have faced would be anywhere comparable to the racism faced by the black people or the hispanic people.

In fact, the most overwhelming evidence that is as clear as daylight is that the Indian American people have a fantastic run in seeking their dreams and aspirations across America. Town after town, city after city, state after state I have met with Indian Americans — Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs — and I have not found one single person who has told me that they could not succeed in their business or workplace because they were Indian.

Faculty appointments in Indian universities are so egregiously biased that it is beyond shameful. Here in the US I am not aware of an Indian American who was discriminated by their university and denied appointment or tenure because they were Indian. I know a whole bunch of desi doctors in America. They are among the richest people. I have been to their homes. I have seen their private swimming pools with peacocks in their yards. They are surgeons, they are cardiologists, they are radiologists. You know who is discriminating against them? Other Indians.

It is shameful that Priyanka Chopra should talk about facing racism without expressing her gratefulness for a society that welcomed her with open arms and gave her the opportunity that she would not find even back home in India. I am an Indian citizen and I am a guest in the United States. It is amazing how much at home I feel in the United States, much, much more than I ever felt in India.

Right now I am traveling: I am in California, thousands of miles away from home. My wife and son are alone at home. But I do not fear for their security. I am supremely confident that they are safe. I never felt this confidence when I left them alone at home in Allahabad or in Gurgaon.

I can write endless reams on this subject.

Am I saying that there is no racism in America? No, I am not saying that. I am saying that I have found absolutely no discrimination, including and especially by White people, in America. And that’s my experience and my reality on a daily basis.

मैंने पूछ लिया, “How old are you?”
